FIELD NOTES CIRCLE

Well... the first Circle is full. ❤️

Thank you.

I wanted to keep this first one intentionally small because I didn't want it to become me talking at a screen while everyone else listened. I wanted it to feel like sitting down together, bringing real questions, real observations, and giving everyone the space to be part of the conversation.

That's exactly what this Circle is about.

It's a place to bring the moments that stay with you.

"I noticed this..."

"I don't understand why my horse did that."

"Something happened, and I can't stop thinking about it."

Together, we'll pause, notice more, and explore those moments through the lens of Horsemanship from Nature.

If you missed this month's Circle, don't worry.

The next Field Notes Circle will be at the end of October.

Because these are intentionally small, places will be offered on a first come, first served basis.

If you'd like to be first to hear when October opens, send me FIELD NOTES and I'll add you to the October list.

I have a feeling these conversations are only just beginning. 🤎

"Who says stallions can't live together?"

Champ and Parker.

Mutual grooming isn't something you can force. It's a choice. It's part of how horses build and maintain relationships within a herd.

This is everyday life at Windchaser Ranch, where our horses live as a herd, with space, movement, and the freedom to be horses.

Spa Day... Life on nature's clock!

05/09/2026

A little forage walk with Champ today, and apparently this old olive grove had something rather interesting going on.

Every now and again he would put his nose into one of these little holes and really work at the scent. At first I thought perhaps he'd found something edible because he seemed very determined to get whatever it was out.

Then I looked at his face.

That's the Flehmen response, where a horse draws an interesting scent into the vomeronasal organ to process it.

So now I'm wondering whether he was actually investigating the scent of another animal.

I don't know.

And I'm quite happy with that.

One of the things I love about spending time with horses is that sometimes the most useful thing we can do is watch before deciding. What has caught their attention? What changes? How much interest do they have in it? What are they telling us through those tiny changes in expression and behaviour?

This little moment is actually part of something much bigger with Champ at the moment.

We are starting to do more together after his summer break, and that preparation isn't simply about getting his body ready to carry me again. It's about paying attention to the horse who is actually standing in front of me.

I'll be talking about that more in next week's Field Note.

But today?

We were just following a nose through an olive grove.

And admiring the most expensive mane in living history. 😂❤️

Champ Had a Better Idea... 😂 | Ranch Life

I honestly had no idea what he was eating...

Turns out he was telling me he'd rather use the hoof stand. 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Just another day with Champ.

Apparently having your horses at home means you're riding out all day.

Apparently.

Meanwhile, I'm picking up s**t, treating stuff, fly spray and doing pedicures.

Today's pedicure was Champ's.

There was sweating. There was swearing. My trousers gave up. Champ stole my microphone.

And I said "good boy" approximately 700 times.

Just another day at Windchaser Ranch. 😂

I wish it was that quick!
