Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Centre is an Egyptian non-profit organization founded in 2008. In the midst of historic Old Cairo emerges a beating heart for contemporary art and culture in Egypt. Its facilities include a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that host different art mediums and cultural events. Darb 1718 houses two art exhibition spaces, theater, dance, and concert stages, a

n outdoor cinema for independent film screenings, gardens and rooftops, in addition to an artist residency to accommodate international artists and curators from all around the world. The center provides workshops, programs, and initiatives to educate and mentor emerging artists and offer them a space to exhibit their work alongside established artists. It also organises music festivals, concerts, spaces that are available for rent, and much more. Darb 1718 is a hub connecting Egyptian artists from several walks of life with the local and international arts and culture scene. It is an art nucleus and a gathering point for all parallel events in Egypt. Join us this Friday at 5PM for Natalia Ossef’s End-of-Residency Presentation at Darb 1718.

During her residency, Natalia explored textile and craft traditions in Egypt, including visits to the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Center, taking khayameya courses in Bab Zuweila, and a trip to Tunis Village in Faiyoum.

Her presentation will offer insights into her artistic practice, research, and reflections on learning in Cairo over the course of the residency.

All are welcome.

القطات من لليلة الأولى من عروض أفلام "جسور"، والتي قدمت أعمال أربعة صُنّاع أفلام: محمد صباحي، حفصة برعي، مهند بلال، وألأرقم مزمل.

من خلال سلسلة "جسور"، نسعى إلى مشاركة حكايات قد لا تجد دائمًا منصة للعرض، وإلى التعلم من بعضنا البعض عبر الجلوس مع وجهات نظر مختلفة. لا ننظر إلى التنوع فقط من زاوية تعدد الجنسيات، بل نهتم أيضًا بعرض أفلام تُظهر الطرق المتعددة التي يمكن من خلالها التفاعل مع الثقافة والمجتمع.

شكر كبير لصُنّاع الأفلام، والحضور، والفريق القائم على هذه الليالي. ترقبوا المزيد من العروض قريبًا.

Recapping our first "Jusoor" film screening night, featuring the work of four filmmakers: Muhammed Subahi, Hafsa Baraei, Mohannad Bilal, and Alargam Muzmail.

With the "Jusoor" series, we aim to share stories that might not always find a platform to be seen and learn from one another by sitting with different perspectives. We are not only looking at diversity as a matter of multinational representation, but also to screen films that display the many ways one can relate to culture and society.

"جسور" هي سلسلة عروض لأفلام قصيرة تهدف إلى دعم مجهودات صُنّاع الأفلام الشباب، وتوفير منصة لهم في درب ١٧١٨، وبناء جسور بين الثقافات المختلفة في القاهرة مع الاحتفاء بالتنوع. بعد كل عرض، بنستضيف المخرجين وفريق العمل في نقاش مفتوح مع الحضور.

في العرض ده، بنعرض ٤ أفلام قصيرة لصُنّاع أفلام سودانيين:
"دخان "(Sudanese Smoke) لمحمد صباحي، "جدائل الهوية" لحفصة برعي، "آخر حنة "(The Last Henna) لمهند بلال، و"الدافع" (Motive) للأرقام مزمل.

مستنيينكم يوم الأحد ٢٦ أبريل الساعة ٧ مساءً . لاكتشاف الأفلام والمشاركة في نقاشات حولها.

"Jusoor" is a series of short film screenings with the aim to support the work of young filmmakers, create a platform for them at Darb 1718, and build bridges across different cultures in Cairo while celebrating diversity. After each screening, we invite the directors and cast to join an open discussion with the audience.

This screening features 4 short films by Sudanese filmmakers:
Dukhan (Sudanese Smoke) by Muhammed Subahi, Braids of Identity by Hafsa Baraei, The Last Henna by Mohannad Bilal, and Motive by Alargam Muzmail.

We look forward to welcoming you on Sunday, April 26th at 7pm to discover these films and take part in thoughtful conversations around them.

Created during her residency at Darb 1718 in 2024, “Cairo Encounters” follows four Western European women who moved to Cairo in search of love. The documentary explores how their choices shape their identities and their relationships with Egyptian society.

It offers a nuanced portrait of a community where love and cultural exchange form both bridges and barriers. Living in different parts of Cairo and at different stages of life, Anke, Jo, Claire, and Kristin each navigate belonging in their own way.
