A Meaningful Dialogue on Somalia and Its Diaspora 🇸🇴

We were pleased to welcome H.E. Ibrahim Gure, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia, during Somali Week Cairo 2026.

Main Panel

“The Somali Government and Its Policies Towards Somalis in the Diaspora”

The session provided an important platform for dialogue on the Somali Government’s engagement with Somalis living abroad, with discussions addressing diaspora affairs, priorities, communication, support, and engagement with Somali communities beyond Somalia.

A particularly significant development discussed during the session was the establishment of a dedicated Diaspora Affairs Office for the Somali community in Egypt, reflecting an important step toward strengthening communication, support, and engagement with Somalis living in Egypt.

H.E. Ibrahim Gure’s participation contributed meaningfully to the dialogue and provided an opportunity for the Somali community in Egypt to engage with perspectives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

SAFWAC Foundation sincerely appreciated his participation and valuable contribution to Somali Week Cairo 2026, and to a wider conversation on strengthening connections between Somalia and its diaspora. 🇸🇴

A Voice From the Diaspora

One of the most meaningful moments of the My Hiddo conversation was hearing directly from a young Somali voice born in the diaspora.

Rayan Yassin shared a personal reflection on identity, family, legacy, and the influence of her grandmother in keeping Somalia present in her life.

Her story offered a powerful reminder:

Identity is not passed on through lessons alone.

It is passed through people, relationships, stories, values, and the everyday life of a family.

Rayan’s experience became a living example of the question at the heart of Somali Week Cairo 2026:

What do we pass on to our children?

Somali Week Cairo 2026 — The Legacy We Pass on to Our Children

Somali Week Cairo 2026 brought together heritage, stories, dialogue, learning, and community around one powerful question:

What do we pass on to our children?

Under the theme “The Legacy We Pass on to Our Children — Our Heritage · Our Stories · Our Future,” the third edition of Somali Week continued the journey from belonging and identity toward responsibility: preserving what we have inherited and passing it forward to the next generation.

From cultural heritage and literature to youth identity, family engagement, the My Hiddo program, and community dialogue, the week created a space to celebrate Somali heritage while thinking about its future.

Because legacy is not only what we leave behind.

It is what we teach, practice, and pass on.

Empowering girls is not just support — it is an investment in the future of the entire community.

When girls have access to education, training, and decent work opportunities, they become stronger, more independent, and better able to support their families and contribute positively to society.

At SAFWAC Foundation, we believe every girl deserves a real opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve her dreams.
We continue working to create safe spaces and meaningful programs that equip girls and young women with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed for a dignified and successful future.

Empowering girls today means building the leaders of tomorrow.

لقاءٌ امتلأ بالمحبة، والتقدير، والوفاء، وقلوب اجتمعت على الامتنان لمن ترك أثراً طيباً بعلمه وأخلاقه وعطائه.
