Animal Welfare of Luxor - AWOL. AWOL is a charity registered in Egypt and England providing free veterinary care for animals of the poor agricultural west bank communities in Luxor.

AWOL is a UK registered charity (1124154) which provides free veterinary care and animal welfare for animals in the poor farming communities on the west bank in Luxor. AWOL also aims to improve the welfare of animals through education of their owners and their children. Many of the animals treated are working animals and provide the only means of making a living for the people of this impoverished area. The charity is entirely reliant on donations and is run by English trustees and Egyptian/English management in Luxor and in the UK. This page is not monitored 24/7. If you have any concerns about an animal on Luxor's west bank please call 01002952215.. For general information please contact UK Managing Trustee Angela on [email protected]

The dog whisperer (AKA Dr George)! It can take patience to persuade a wary street dog to trust you but Dr George has the knack! This girl was brought to the AWOL centre to be spayed. After a short recuperation she will be vaccinated, tagged and returned to the home she knows.

Friday is our staff's day off but our dedicated team are sometimes needed and we always do our best to help. Today we were needed on both the east and west banks so our staff gave up their free time to treat different cases in completely different directions.

A local lady asked for help with four puppies she has been caring for with eye infections in Luxor town. The caring lady is normally at work so we agreed to meet her today to treat the puppies. Dr Aya administered eye drops and we'll return to support the puppies and their carer in a few days.

On the west bank we were contacted by a tourist concerned about a dog heard barking and crying all day. The dog had been tied up all day with a short rope but when our team arrived the dog was loose. He was given food and worming treatment by Dr Mahmoud and fitted with a soft collar. The owner wasn't present but we left a long leash instead of the short rope he had been using. We will revisit next week to see how the dog is getting on.

Today we went back out to Hatshepsut's temple to check on the dogs and take them food and we were delighted to see a very special boy! The handsome gold dog is Antar who we collected from the temple late last year when he was seen limping. He was treated at the AWOL centre for some nasty bite wounds then castrated, vaccinated, and later returned to his home. Not only was he proudly showing off his ear tag he also had a new collar with his name on which the security guards had supplied him. It makes us so happy to see this lovely boy well and healthy. All the dogs we could find were checked and food left for them.

Our inpatient with the awful neck wound has made wonderful progress with continued treatment at the AWOL centre. He has now gone back home with a nice new harness to replace the dangerous rope his owner had used. His owner had been given advice on his care so we hope this won't happen again. He should be back for a check-up soon. See post from September 19th for original photos of this lovely boy.
