75 years ago, the world made a promise to protect people forced to flee war, violence and persecution.

Today, 75 global voices stand in solidarity with that commitment.

They have joined a growing coalition reaffirming The Promise of the Refugee Convention.

The Promise is a public statement of solidarity, bringing together prominent figures from across society to reaffirm support for refugees and the right to seek safety.Launched on 28 July, as the Refugee Convention marks its 75th anniversary, it aims to build a diverse coalition for refugee protectio...

“Being Scottish isn’t where you’re born, it’s the love you have for the country.”

Ten years after arriving on Scotland’s Isle of Bute as refugees from Syria following their brief stay in Egypt, the Fasi family have built thriving lives, businesses, friendships and a deep sense of belonging, reminding us that when refugees are welcomed, they contribute, connect and help communities grow stronger.

From learning English and opening local businesses to volunteering and building lasting relationships, they are part of what Scotland calls its “New Scots”.

Every year, a small number of the most vulnerable refugees in host countries, including Egypt, are given the opportunity to start over through resettlement programmes. With resettlement places remaining extremely limited compared to global needs, these opportunities are life-changing for the few who are able to access them. More than a journey to a new country, resettlement offers the chance to rebuild lives, pursue education and employment, and find a place to call home.

As we mark 75 years of the 1951 Refugee Convention, we are reminded of its role as the cornerstone of international refugee protection and its simple, enduring principle: people forced to flee war, violence, or persecution deserve safety and protection.

For decades, the Convention has helped millions rebuild their lives, from post-war Europe to today's crises in Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and beyond.

In Egypt, this commitment remains as relevant as ever. The country hosts more than one million registered refugees and asylum-seekers from over 60 nationalities. They live side by side with Egyptian communities rather than in camps—demonstrating the resilience of refugees and those who support them, while underscoring the vital need to keep asylum accessible and protection at the center of our response.

As global displacement reaches record levels and humanitarian resources come under increasing strain, the values enshrined in the Refugee Convention remain as vital today as they were 75 years ago. Protecting refugees is a shared responsibility that requires solidarity, international cooperation, and sustained support for both refugees and the host communities that welcome them.

GENEVA – Seventy-five years after the Refugee Convention was opened for signature on 28 July 1951, it remains the foundation of the international refugee protection system and one of the most consequential international legal instruments ever adopted.Born in the aftermath of the Second World War, ...

Ayub. Hind. Mariia and Anatolii. Sadeqa. Tausi.

These are the names of those paying the highest price in conflicts. There are millions more, each with a name and story.

Different countries. Different crises. Same reality.

Millions of people have been forced to flee around the world.

Behind every figure is a person who’s fled violence, war or persecution. Many are still waiting for safety and stability.

Homes, workplaces and streets are now in ruins.

People have lost loved ones, their houses, towns and livelihoods.

They are displaced over and over again, stuck in a state of uncertainty.

This is what war leaves behind.

The people of Lebanon need peace.
