Young people are shaping the future of cities.

On International Youth Day 2026, UN-Habitat celebrates young people whose ideas, leadership and innovation are helping address some of the most pressing urban challenges of our time.

Across the world, the youth are participating in local governance, designing inclusive housing and public spaces, advancing climate resilience, strengthening communities and contributing to the achievement of the SDGs through UN-Habitat-supported initiatives. These include the Young Gamechangers Initiative, Youth 2030 Cities, the Youth Advisory Board and the One Stop Youth Centres.

As cities continue to grow, meaningful youth participation remains essential to creating inclusive, resilient and sustainable urban futures.

Housing is more than a roof over our heads. It’s the foundation of sustainable development.

The new SDG 11 Global Report 2026: Housing at the Centre of Sustainable Cities and Communities reminds us that achieving inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities starts with ensuring access to adequate housing for all.

From climate resilience and public transport to health, livelihoods and social inclusion, housing is connected to every aspect of urban life. Yet today, billions of people still lack access to adequate housing, making accelerated action more urgent than ever.

At UN-Habitat Egypt, we remain committed to working with national and local partners to advance sustainable urbanization and improve the quality of life in cities and communities across Egypt.

Heatwaves are often described as natural hazards. Yet extreme heat becomes most dangerous when it intersects with poverty, inadequate housing, gender inequality, age, disability, and limited access to essential services.

In many ways, climate hazards act as mirrors, revealing and amplifying existing social inequalities.

Informal settlements are especially vulnerable due to:

• Dense urban construction
• Tin and concrete roofs that absorb and retain heat
• Limited trees and green spaces
• Inadequate access to water and reliable electricity
• Insufficient infrastructure and long-standing marginalisation

As a result, people living in informal settlements, older persons, persons with disabilities, outdoor workers, and low-income households often face the greatest risks because they have fewer resources to stay cool, access healthcare, or cope with prolonged periods of extreme heat.

Women and girls are also disproportionately affected. They often carry greater responsibilities for securing food and water and providing care, face increased risks during climate-related events, and are expected to experience some of the most significant social and economic impacts of climate change.

Building climate resilience means addressing not only rising temperatures, but also the inequalities that make some communities far more vulnerable than others.

إن إشراك أصحاب المصلحة بصورة فعّالة يتجاوز مجرد المشاورات؛ فهو يربط بين الالتزامات العالمية والمعارف المحلية والخبرات العملية، ويهيئ فرصًا لتعاون مستدام يُترجم الرؤى إلى أثرٍ ملموس على أرض الواقع.

وتوفر سلسلة الحوارات العالمية مع أصحاب المصلحة منصةً تتيح لأصحاب المصلحة التفاعل المباشر مع قيادة موئل الأمم المتحدة، وتبادل وجهات النظر، واستكشاف السبل الكفيلة بتحويل الأولويات المشتركة إلى إجراءات وشراكات عملية.

As climate change continues to reshape our cities and communities, ensuring that everyone has access to safe, resilient, and sustainable housing is more important than ever.

Building climate resilience starts at home and it requires solutions that are inclusive, locally driven, and designed to protect people and livelihoods for generations to come.

Climate-resilient housing is designed to withstand climate shocks like heatwaves, floods, storms, and droughts, while remaining safe, affordable, and livable, especially for the most vulnerable communities.

It’s not just about stronger buildings.

Climate-resilient homes:
• Use local, low-carbon, and durable materials.
• Are designed for local climate risks, including flood-safe foundations, heat-responsive design, strong drainage infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, and greywater reuse.
• Protect livelihoods and health, not just walls and roofs.
• Help combat water scarcity and reduce risks such as erosion and extreme heat.

How do we build and scale climate-resilient housing?
• Plan with communities, not for them.
• Build climate resilience into policies and building codes.
• Prioritize affordability and inclusion.
• Use nature-based and low-cost solutions.
• Scale through systems, not pilots, by linking housing to national climate plans, finance mechanisms, and citywide strategies.

تؤكد الرسالة الصادرة عن الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة أن الخطة الحضرية الجديدة أصبحت إطارًا معتمدًا للعمل. وحان الوقت الآن لتسريع وتيرة تنفيذها.

وخلال الاجتماع رفيع المستوى لاستعراض منتصف المدة لتنفيذ الخطة الحضرية الجديدة، جدّدت الدول الأعضاء التزامها ببناء مدن أكثر شمولًا وقدرةً على الصمود واستدامة، من خلال توفير السكن الملائم، وتعزيز الحوكمة المحلية، وزيادة الاستثمارات، والارتكاز على البيانات الدقيقة والشراكات الفاعلة باعتبارها ركائز أساسية للمرحلة المقبلة.

وتكتسب هذه المخرجات أهمية خاصة بالنسبة للمنتدى الحضري العالمي، الذي يشكّل منصة دولية تجمع الحكومات والمدن والمجتمعات المحلية ومنظمات المجتمع المدني والأوساط الأكاديمية والقطاع الخاص لتبادل الخبرات والحلول، وتعزيز الشراكات، ودفع تنفيذ الخطة الحضرية الجديدة إلى الأمام.

كما أسهمت النقاشات والنتائج التي خرج بها المنتدى الحضري العالمي الثالث عشر ( ) في باكو في الحفاظ على هذا الزخم، مؤكدةً الحاجة الملحة إلى ترجمة الالتزامات العالمية إلى إجراءات عملية تُحدث أثرًا ملموسًا في حياة الناس.

Cities are responsible for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions, but they also offer some of the greatest opportunities to accelerate climate action.

Through integrated urban planning, sustainable infrastructure and evidence-based policies, cities can reduce their carbon footprint while improving quality of life and building resilience.

Here are seven ways cities can reduce their carbon footprint:

1️⃣ Build compact cities – Shorter distances mean less driving and lower emissions.

2️⃣ Move people, not cars – Invest in safe walking, cycling and reliable public transport.

3️⃣ Make public transport the easy choice – Efficient, affordable and well-connected public transport reduces congestion and emissions.

4️⃣ Improve building efficiency – Better design, retrofits and efficient appliances reduce energy demand.

5️⃣ Switch to renewable energy – Clean energy for homes, businesses and public services cuts emissions.

6️⃣ Embrace the circular economy – Reduce waste, reuse materials and recover resources.

7️⃣ Invest in nature – Trees, parks and green infrastructure absorb carbon and cool our cities.
