Yesterday, some of our interns participated in an event run by the Center for Christian-Muslim Understanding and Partnership for visiting Theology students from Lund University, Sweden. We heard presentations from, Karim Girgis M.A. on historical reflections on Christianity in Egypt, Emad Atef M.Phil’s introduction to Coptic Orthodoxy, and Dr Omaima Abou Bakr about women reading the Quran, past and present. This was a fantastic opportuntity for our interns to learn more about these topics. Hear what they have to say about their experience:

“Walking into the event felt wonderful: a long white-dressed table, red accents, and a room full of people listening to the history of the Coptic Church in Egypt. The speakers opened meaningful dialogue between Coptic and Islamic perspectives, while the moments in between sparked genuine conversations—with theology students from Sweden preparing for priesthood. A beautiful glimpse into religion across worlds”

“Really enjoyed meeting new people and exchanging different views and perspectives on such complicated topics. Very valuable topics were discussed especially in light of current global trends”

Last thursday, we went to the museum for Islamic art! We enjoyed the beautiful mosaic and colorful tiles while we learned about the different time periods of the Islamic world. Besides, there is no better place than this to spend your day in Egypt when it's 37 degrees outside :))

Yesterday, we took a trip to visit the Monastery of Saint Simon the Tanner, located in the side of Mokattam Mountain. These churches just east of the Manshiyat Nasir serve the coptic community living here. Saint Simon the Tanner Hall St Mark’s Church, the smaller of the two cave churches was first created in the 1970s through the removal of a large quantity of rock. The church was named after Saint Mark, who first brought the Gospel to Egypt nad can hold 5,000 people.

The second church, the larger Cathedral of Virgin Mary and St Simon the Tanner, was built later to accommodate the growing church, with seating for 20,000 making it the largest church in the Middle East. St Simon the Tanner was a 10th-century saint, who was key in the moving of Mokattam Montain as ordered by Al Muizz. The story of St Simon the Tanner is visible throughout the Monastery, with images of his blinding and distribution of water.

Along with witnessing a service and exploring the monastery, a few of our interns enjoyed the zipline that allows a view of Manshiyat Nasir and the rest of Cairo beyond!
