How do we grow our movement?

For the last 7 years, I have made a career in sales and product management, and I've found that a lot of my skills in sales transfer well to membership recruitment. We need to communicate in easy-to-understand terms that non-Scouts can understand, and we need focused strategies for growth. We also need a way to measure our impact, so that we can effectively communicate the benefits of Scouting. Supported by the European Union and other partners, many research studies have given us a great starting point for a data-driven approach. We should expand this to measure our impact globally and in different environments, like school-based scouting programs in the Asia-Pacific region and in countries that have experienced crisis where scouts have shown up on the front lines. This survey shouldn't be limited strictly to scouting environments: there's no reason we couldn't look at professional skills too. I am a big believer in a data-driven growth strategy, and by more effectively measuring our impact as scouts, we can show non-scouts the benefits of our movement in their personal and professional lives.

As we gear up for the online session this weekend, let's focus on my third and most important theme: Growth.

Limited resources are one of the strongest barriers to providing an impactful scouting program in many NSOs. WOSM is well positioned as the world's leading youth movement to partner with other organizations that share similar goals, benefitting from shared resources. With the new Business Development Unit, we have the opportunity to think outside the box and diversify, like using social media to strengthen WOSM's identity in the public eye. Expanding on that note, a strong communications strategy is key to enhance our public identity. Instead of having non-Scouts come to us, we should be meeting them where they're at. For example, by tapping into alternative communication platforms like podcasts and leveraging social media influencers to stay relevant. A great example of this was The Scout Association's collaboration with Bear Grylls as Chief Scout, inspiring millions to join our movement. Will you join me on my journey to grow our movement?
