The advisor of Shaykh ul Azhar and Secretary-General of WOAG, Dr. Abdel Daim Naser, had a meeting with African students this past weekend examining educational challenges africans face in their respective countries and how these challenges affect foreign students coming to study at Al Azhar University.

Part of the mandate of WOAG is to enhance communication with foreign students at Al Azhar University and learn about the most important challenges faced during their educational journey.

The meeting held included representatives from a number of african countries including Mustapha Allie as a representative of South Africa.

Topics of discussion were as follows:
• Pre-university educational systems in the respective countries in attendance
• How these systems contribute to student access when arriving at Al Azhar University
•Maximising utilisation of Azhar scholarships
•Supporting holistic development in african societies

Concerns highlighted by student representatives:
• Al Azhar alumni facing unemployment when returning home.
• Connected to unemployment is the importance of studying job markets needs in the relevant countries to assist
alumni;
• Skills development;
• Inter-organisational co-ordination;
• Training and qualification programs for foreign students

As a result of this meeting, we are collecting information from current South African students and graduates of the Al Azhar University.

Contact us to share your experiences and challenges between the South African and azhar education systems.
