From national dialogue to joint institutional action: a step years in the making to protect Egypt's birds
Some milestones are more than new events. They crown years of sustained effort and open the way to a new chapter of collaboration. Yesterday, the Egyptian Illegal Killing of Birds (IKB) Task Force was officially launched at the Journalists Syndicate, marking a turning point in Egypt's bird conservation journey and a shift toward unified, institutional action.
After more than a decade of work on this issue, 2026 brought steady and decisive progress. It began with the experts' workshop organized by Nature Conservation Egypt in Cairo on 10-11 May, followed by the Task Force's founding meeting in Alexandria on 17 September and a field visit to Burullus the next day. The journey culminated in the official launch, attended by over 40 journalists and media professionals, alongside stakeholders, experts, and the coordinators of the Task Force's technical committees.
The opening remarks set the direction clearly: moving from scattered efforts to organized, science- and data-driven institutional action, with measurable impact. Protecting birds is not the responsibility of specialists alone. It is a national issue tied to biodiversity, ecosystem health, natural resources, and the future of coming generations.
In that spirit, the media took a central place in the discussions, as an indispensable partner in driving change. The conversation opened with the ecosystem services birds provide, including pest control, which underscores their value beyond their presence in nature. It then turned to the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of hunting, and the need to understand them in order to design realistic interventions and sustainable alternatives such as birdwatching tourism. From there, the discussion addressed the media's responsibility in handling content that glorifies wildlife violations, such as showing off captive raptors, and concluded with plans to expand awareness programmes by engaging volunteers and university students, particularly in governorates where hunting is most intensive.
These discussions mark the start of a broader path, guided by Egypt's National Roadmap 2026-2030, which combines scientific research and monitoring, awareness and media engagement, institutional cooperation, community work, and economic alternatives.
The launch is therefore not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new phase of joint action. Success will be measured not by the meetings we hold, but by real impact on the ground: protecting birds and their habitats, raising awareness of our natural heritage, and building partnerships that deliver lasting change.
