Protecting the Red Sea’s unique marine ecosystems requires strong partnerships, sustainable solutions, and collective action 🪸.

On , and on the sidelines of the Egyptian Red Sea Initiative (ERSI)’s launch, H.E. Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, H.E. Dr. Walid El Barqy, Governor of the Red Sea Governorate, and Ms. Chitose Noguchi, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative, visited the Red Sea Protected Areas and Giftun Island accompanied by the Red Sea Protectorates team.

The visit highlighted ongoing efforts to safeguard the Red Sea’s globally significant biodiversity and explored how will support strengthened protected area management, coral reef conservation, and sustainable tourism across the region.

Discussions also focused on advancing marine waste management, establishing the Egyptian Coral Reefs Fund, and expanding community-based ecotourism opportunities in Wadi El Gemal—demonstrating how conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and local development can go hand in hand.

Together, we are working to protect one of Egypt’s most valuable natural assets for future generations while supporting a sustainable blue economy that benefits both people and nature.

في يوم البيئة العالمي، وعلى هامش ورشة إطلاق المبادرة المصرية للبحر الأحمر، قامت الدكتورة منال عوض، وزيرة التنمية المحلية والبيئة، والدكتور وليد البرقي، محافظ البحر الأحمر، والسيدة تشيتوسي نوجوتشي، الممثلة المقيمة لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي في مصر، بزيارة محميات البحر الأحمر وجزيرة الجفتون، بمشاركة فريق محميات البحر الأحمر.

وسلطت الزيارة الضوء على الجهود الجارية ودعم المبادرة المصرية للبحر الأحمر لتعزيز الحفاظ على التنوع البيولوجي، وتطوير إدارة المحميات، ودعم السياحة المستدامة في البحر الأحمر. كما تناولت المناقشات إدارة المخلفات البحرية، وإنشاء الصندوق المصري للشعاب المرجانية، وفرص السياحة البيئية المجتمعية في وادي الجمال.

A landmark moment for Egypt’s marine ecosystems and blue economy. 🌊🇪🇬

Today in Hurghada, on the sidelines of World Environment Day, the Ministry of Local Development and Environment, UNDP Egypt, the Red Sea Governorate, and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) officially launched the Egyptian Red Sea Initiative (ERSI).

The launch brought together H.E. Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment; Dr. Walid Abdel Azim Al Barqui, Governor of the Red Sea Governorate; Chitose Noguchi, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative; Yabanex Batista, Deputy Director of the UN Global Team for GFCR (via a recorded video message); Ms. Yomna El Bahar, Vice Minister of Tourism and Antiquities; Major General Khaled Abbas, Director of the Nature Conservation Sector at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA); and Amany Nakhla, Assistant Resident Representative for Biodiversity at UNDP Egypt, alongside government representatives, development partners, private sector stakeholders, financial institutions, and civil society organizations.

The Egyptian Red Sea Initiative seeks to strengthen coral reef conservation while advancing sustainable blue economy opportunities across the Red Sea region. By bringing together government, local communities, the private sector, and development partners, the initiative aims to mobilize sustainable finance, support nature-positive investments, enhance marine protected area management, and create sustainable livelihoods linked to healthy marine ecosystems.

خطوة هـامة في مسيرة حماية النظم البيئية البحرية والاقتصاد الأزرق في مصر! 🌊🇪🇬

اليوم من مدينة الغردقة، وعلى هامش الاحتفال باليوم العالمي للبيئة، أطلقت وزارة التنمية المحلية ووزارة البيئة، بالتعاون مع برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي في مصر، ومحافظة البحر الأحمر، والصندوق العالمي للشعاب المرجانية (GFCR)، "المبادرة المصرية للبحر الأحمر" (ERSI) بشكل رسمي.

شهد حفل الإطلاق حضور معالي الدكتورة منال عوض، وزيرة التنمية المحلية والبيئة؛ والدكتور وليد عبد العظيم البارقي، محافظ البحر الأحمر؛ والسيدة تشيتوسي نوجوتشي، الممثل المقيم لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي في مصر؛ والسيد يابانيكس باتيستا، نائب مدير الفريق العالمي للأمم المتحدة للصندوق العالمي للشعاب المرجانية (عبر رسالة فيديو مسجلة)؛ والأستاذة يمنى البحار، نائب وزير السياحة والآثار؛ واللواء خالد عباس، رئيس قطاع حماية الطبيعة بجهاز شؤون البيئة المصري؛ والأستاذة أماني نخلة، مساعد الممثل المقيم للتنوع البيولوجي ببرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي في مصر، إلى جانب لفيف من ممثلي الحكومة، وشركاء التنمية، وممثلي القطاع الخاص، والمؤسسات المالية، ومنظمات المجتمع المدني.

تسعى "المبادرة المصرية للبحر الأحمر" إلى تعزيز جهود حماية وصون الشعاب المرجانية، مع دفع عجلة فرص الاقتصاد الأزرق المستدام في منطقة البحر الأحمر. ومن خلال توحيد جهود الحكومة، والمجتمعات المحلية، والقطاع الخاص، وشركاء التنمية، تهدف المبادرة إلى حشد التمويل المستدام، ودعم الاستثمارات الصديقة للطبيعة، وتطوير إدارة المحميات البحرية، وخلق سبل عيش مستدامة ترتبط بسلامة ونمو النظم البيئية البحرية.

🌊 Tomorrow marks UNDP's official launch of the Egyptian Red Sea Initiative, in the presence of H.E. the Minister of Local Development and Environment and H.E. the Governor of the Red Sea.

Led in partnership with the Ministry of Local Development and Environment, the Red Sea Governorate, UNDP Egypt, and supported by the Global Fund for Coral Reefs, the initiative aims to advance practical, reef-positive solutions that protect Egypt’s Red Sea ecosystems while supporting sustainable tourism, local livelihoods, and long-term sustainable finance.

بالنسبة لمراد، البحر الأحمر مش بس مكان للغوص، ده مكان شغله وحياته اليومية. مراد بيشوف عن قرب قد إيه حماية الشعاب مهمة، مش بس للطبيعة، لكن كمان للسياحة، ولفرص العمل، وللناس اللي شغلهم وحياتهم مرتبطين بالبحر. من خلال شغله كمدرب غوص، بيشوف كل يوم زوار جايين من أماكن مختلفة مخصوص علشان يستمتعوا بواحد من أجمل مواقع الغوص والشعاب المرجانية

بالنسبة للريس احمد، الشعاب المرجانية في البحر الأحمر مش مجرد ألوان أو كائنات عايشة تحت الميه، دي جزء من يومه، شغله، وذاكرته. هي البحر اللي اتعلم يقرأه من صغره، ومصدر رزقه اللي ورثه عن أهله وأجداده. وعلشان صحة البحر مرتبطة بحياة ناس كتير، بنحكي في يوم البيئة العالمي قصص الأشخاص اللي حياتهم مرتبطة بالشعاب المرجانية.

These reefs are not only a natural treasure. They are the foundation of coastal life, livelihoods, and local economies. They support fisheries, attract visitors from around the world, sustain jobs, and help protect coastal communities.

That is why protecting coral reefs is not only an environmental priority. It is an investment in long-term economic infrastructure, sustaining fisheries, tourism, jobs, and coastal resilience for the communities built around them.

في اليوم العالمي للشعاب المرجانية، نحتفي بأحد أكثر النظم البيئية المرجانية تميزًا وقدرةً على الصمود في العالم: الشعاب المرجانية في البحر الأحمر المصري.

ولا تمثل هذه الشعاب كنزًا طبيعيًا فحسب، بل تُعد أيضًا ركيزة أساسية للحياة الساحلية وسبل العيش والاقتصادات المحلية. فهي تدعم قطاع مصايد الأسماك، وتجذب الزوار من مختلف أنحاء العالم، وتوفر فرص العمل، وتسهم في حماية المجتمعات الساحلية.
