Comoros Foreign Minister: Al-Azhar Graduates Hold a Great Stance in our Society and Occupy Many Leadership Positions
His Eminence the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb, received Mr. Mbaé Mohamed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Union of the Comoros, at al-Azhar ash-Sharif headquarters. The meeting aimed at exploring ways to promote al-Azhar's academic and dawah support for the people of the Comoros.
The Grand Imam affirmed al-Azhar's pride in its historic ties with the Union of the Comoros. He noted that Comoran students have played an important role in consolidating and strengthening these relations. He explained that al-Azhar allocates 40 annual scholarships for Comoran students across various fields of study. Besides, 735 male and female students from the Comoros are currently enrolled at al-Azhar. He also confirmed al-Azhar's readiness to increase the number of scholarships to meet the needs of this Muslim nation and align with its educational as well as dawah requirements.
For his part, the Comoran Foreign Minister expressed his great pleasure at meeting the Grand Imam. He conveyed his country's deep appreciation for the role of His Eminence and al-Azhar in serving the causes of the Islamic world and supporting Muslims globally, particularly across the African continent. He also requested an increase in the number of Azhari scholarships allocated to Comoran students, stressing that enrollment at al-Azhar is a dream and a great honor for his compatriots.
In this regard, he stated, “I am a graduate of al-Azhar ash-Sharif. I enrolled at al-Azhar from the preparatory stage until I graduated from the Faculty of Languages and Translation. Today, I have come to your Eminence leading a full official delegation composed entirely of al-Azhar graduates from the Union of the Comoros. We come in appreciation of al-Azhar's great favor upon us and in pride of what we learned at the hands of its distinguished scholars. Al-Azhar graduates hold great stance in our society and occupy numerous leadership and diplomatic positions throughout the Comoros.”
The official delegation accompanying the Comoran Foreign Minister included several Azhari graduates: Ambassador Ataa Afandi, Ambassador of the Union of the Comoros to Cairo and a graduate of the Faculty of Islamic Theology at al-Azhar University. The delegation also included several distinguished figures, such as Minister Abdulaziz Madhuma, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Embassy and a graduate of the Faculty of Shariah and Law at al-Azhar University; Mr. Nizar Dahlan, First Secretary at the Embassy and a graduate of the Faculty of Languages and Translation at al-Azhar University; and Mr. Omar Jamal al-Lail, Diplomatic Attaché at the Embassy and a graduate of the Faculty of Arabic Language at al-Azhar University.

"Sahih Al-Islam Program"
"Sahih Al-Islam Program" is a global message to propagate authentic Islam in 22 languages, both local and international.
Within the framework of the awareness mission of the Egyptian Directed Networks, in cooperation with the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates, senior Egyptian Radio presenter Jihan Allam highlights the role of the 'Sahih Al-Islam' (Authentic Islam) program in presenting the correct image of the Islamic religion and correcting misconceptions and doubts raised against it.
Furthermore, she explains that the program aims to introduce the tolerant teachings of Islam by presenting Quranic verses and Prophetic Hadiths with an accurate understanding and a moderate approach. This approach helps spread rational religious awareness and consolidate the values of tolerance and coexistence.
She added that broadcasting the program in 22 languages, including French, helps spread al-Azhar's moderate message to different cultures and peoples worldwide.

Al-Azhar Strongly Condemns Iranian Attacks on Civilian Facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain

Al-Azhar strongly condemns the Iranian attacks targeting the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Bahrain, which caused damage to several civilian and economic facilities. The institution stresses its categorical rejection of these assaults, warning that they threaten civilian safety and violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Kuwait and Bahrain.
Furthermore, al-Azhar ash-Sharif stresses that the continuation of these attacks represents a direct violation of the ceasefire agreement. This dangerous escalation threatens the security and stability of the Gulf countries and further heightens tensions in the region.
Likewise, al-Azhar expresses its profound hope for a revival of Islamic brotherhood, urging all parties to emerge from this dark tunnel, abide by the ceasefire agreement, and allow wisdom, reason, and dialogue to prevail while prioritizing the safety of innocent civilians above all else.

Al-Azhar ash-Sharif condemns, in the strongest terms, the terrorist attack carried out by two armed extremists, driven by hate speech and incitement against Islam, who targeted the Islamic Center in the city of San Diego, California, resulting in the deaths of three attendees and the center's security guard. Al-Azhar affirms that this brutal assault constitutes a heinous crime that demonstrates the grave danger of incitement left unchecked by hate-fueled rhetoric.
Al-Azhar emphasizes that the proven criminal intent of the perpetrators — evidenced through public manifestos and inflammatory writings — along with their deliberate targeting of places of worship and children's educational facilities, and the shedding of innocent blood, constitute "dark terrorism" that demands a decisive response. Al-Azhar further stresses that the failure to confront the phenomenon of Islamophobia, and leniency toward platforms promoting racism, fuel extremism and violence within societies. Al-Azhar calls for strict and immediate measures to protect places of worship and their congregants, in order to prevent the recurrence of such bloody tragedies.

Under the Patronage of the Grand Imam: Al-Azhar Launches International Program for Women Leaders Worldwide

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, al-Azhar Conference Hall hosted the inauguration ceremony of the "Imam at-Tayyeb Scholarship for the International Program for the Preparation of Women Leaders Worldwide." Launched under the gracious patronage of His Eminence the Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad al-Tayyeb, Grand Imam of al-Azhar, the event was jointly organized by the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates, the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for International Students, and the "Arkan" Foundation for Sustainable Development under the slogan "With Knowledge and Leadership... We Create a Generation that Changes the World."
The event featured speeches from Prof. Abbas Shouman, President of the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates and Secretary-General of al-Azhar Council of Senior Scholars; Prof. Nahla al-Saidi, Founder of the Program, Advisor to the Grand Imam for Expatriates’ Affairs, and Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for Expatriates; and Prof. Salama Dawood, President of al-Azhar University and Vice-President of the Organization.
Also speaking at the event were Prof. Nazir Ayyad, M***i of the Republic and Member of the Board of Directors of the Organization; Dr. Amr El-Wardany, Chairman of the Religious Affairs and Endowments Committee of the Egyptian House of Representatives; Mr. Ahmad Abu El-Shouk, Secretary-General of the Arkan Foundation for Sustainable Development; Dr. Iman Karim, General Supervisor of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities; and Dr. Marianne Magdy, Member of the House of Representatives and Member of the National Council for Women.
The inauguration ceremony drew a high-level audience, led by Major General Wael Bekhit, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Organization, and Prof. Abdul-Dayyem Nusseir, Advisor to His Eminence the Grand Imam and Secretary-General of the Organization. The event also saw the participation of senior al-Azhar officials, public figures, dignitaries, and ambassadors, alongside university deans and an elite group of executive, academic, and religious leaders—reflecting the program's profound significance and its vital role in empowering and qualifying women on both local and international levels.
Notably, this international program aligns with al-Azhar’s vision to empower women and equip them with the scientific, intellectual, and leadership skills necessary to prepare a new generation of female leaders capable of making a positive impact on their societies.
The ceremony commenced with a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. Opening remarks delivered by key dignitaries highlighted the program's profound significance and its core objective: developing conscious, qualified female leaders capable of carrying the message of moderation while enhancing the values of sustainable development and social stability.
The "Imam at-Tayyeb Scholarship" aims to prepare and qualify international female leaders by refining their leadership, intellectual, and advocacy skills through a comprehensive academic and training program. This initiative firmly instills the values of moderation and awareness, enhancing the pivotal role of women in community building and sustainable development. “Al-Azhar Graduates” Organizes a Workshop on the Concept of Jahiliyyah for a Number of International Students from Different Nationalities
The World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates organized a workshop themed: “The Concept of Jahiliyyah” for a number of international students from different nationalities. The workshop was lectured by Prof. Abdul Fattah al-‘Awari, member of the Islamic Research Academy and former Dean of the Faculty of Usul al-Din, Cairo branch, al-Azhar University.
The workshop, held at the Organization’s headquarters in Cairo, aimed to correcting the misconceptions related to the concept of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) and demonstrating the proper understanding of it in the light of al-Azhar moderate approach. This will contribute to promoting the international students’ intellectual and religious awareness, establishing the values of moderation and confronting the misconceptions.
To that end, the workshop also discussed Prof. al-‘Awari’s book “The Concept of Jahiliyyah”, published by the Organization’s Center of Refuting the Extremist Thinking. The book explains the term “Jahiliyyah” according to Quran and Sunnah, how jurists and scholars tackled it, in comparison to how the extremist groups misused it. The book also illustrates the precise difference between the meticulous Islamic methodology in understanding the religious terms and the extremists’ intellectual demagogy in tackling concepts, addressing issues for the sake of deception and misleading.
This workshop comes within the framework of the Organization’s keenness to qualify the international students, academically and intellectually, and to enhance the right understanding of the religious and intellectual issues.

Under the auspices of his Eminence the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates, in cooperation with the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for International Students and Arkan Foundation for Sustainable Development, carried out selection examinations to select participants in the program of “Qualifying Women Leaders Around the World.” This was held in preparation for the launch of “Imam Ahmad at-Tayyeb” scholarship offered to female international students. The launch ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 19, at al-Azhar Conference Center, with the attendance of al-Azhar's senior leadership, during which the scholarship recipients will be officially announced.

Moreover, this program is part of al-Azhar’s broader efforts to empower female international students and qualify them academically and in leadership, so that they could assume distinguished positions in their home countries upon their return. This would be achieved through developing leadership skills and strategic thinking, strengthening personal and academic capabilities and cultivating impactful initiatives; all contributing to the formation of female cadres capable of serving their communities with competence and awareness.

It is worth noting that the examinations attracted wide participation from female international students of various nationalities. The evaluation process was conducted according to precise standards and a transparent methodology, encompassing written and oral tests as well as personal interviews, with the aim of selecting the most outstanding candidates for the full scholarship.

In this regard, Prof. Nahla al-Saeidi- founder of the program, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for International Students, and Advisor to the Grand Imam for International Students' Affairs- formed four specialized committees. These comprised a distinguished selection of al-Azhar University faculty members, including: Prof. Manal al-Khouly, Dean of the Faculty of Education for Girls- Cairo, Prof. Walaa al-Aqqad, Dean of the Faculty of Media for Girls- Cairo, Prof. Farida Mohammad Ali, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies for Girls- Cairo, Prof. Khadra Salem, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Education for Girls- Cairo; Prof. Sawsan al-Hudhud, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies for Girls- Cairo, Prof. Mohammad Atta, Prof. Desouky al-Sakhawi, Prof. Abdul Rahman Fawzy; Prof. Mahmoud as-Sayyid Mansour, Prof. Salah Khalaf from the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for International Students and alongside a number of specialized professors and experts. All committee work was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Shaheeda Maraey, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for International Students.

The committee work was also supervised by Prof. Abdul Dayyem Nosseir, Secretary-General of the Organization and Advisor to the Grand Imam. During his tour, he affirmed that al-Azhar ash-Sharif gives due care to qualifying female international students academically, intellectually, and in leadership. He emphasized that building conscious women leaders represents a fundamental pillar in supporting the stability of societies and spreading the values of moderation worldwide. He also commended the high level of applicants, affirming that the program reflects al-Azhar's world mission in qualifying capable individuals who can make a positive impact in their homelands.

In addition, Prof. Nahla al-Saeidi likewise followed the committee proceedings. She stressed that the program is part of al-Azhar ash-Sharif's vision for empowering female international students academically, culturally, and in terms of skills and preparing a generation of women leaders capable of combining academic excellence with social awareness. She noted that these female international students serve as ambassadors of al-Azhar in their home countries, carrying with them a moderate intellectual vision and an elevated academic and humanitarian message.

The participating students expressed their sincere gratitude, appreciation, and deep regard for the Grand Imam for making this initiative possible. They affirmed that such programs contribute to building self-confidence, developing leadership skills, and opening new horizons for their active participation in the development of their communities.

This initiative is part of the leading role that al-Azhar ash-Sharif plays in supporting women, developing qualified human cadres who contribute to building societies and spreading the moderate message around the world.

Prof. Shouman Explains the Principles of Understanding the Quran and Sunnah for International Students at an Al-Azhar Graduates Workshop

Prof. Abbas Shouman, Secretary-General of the Council of Senior Scholars and President of the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates, delivered a lecture to international students during a workshop on the principles of understanding the Quran and Sunnah. The event aimed to provide students from diverse nationalities with a solid foundation for religious understanding.
Prof. Shouman stressed that Shariah texts must be understood within their linguistic context and their broader objectives. By following the Azhari moderate approach, he noted, students can engage with the Quran and Sunnah in a way that truly reflects Islamic values of moderation and tolerance.
