Nutrition Awareness and Balanced Diet Budgeting for Mothers
Cairo, Egypt – 15th May 2026
In response to the growing concerns of poor nutrition among refugee and immigrant families in Cairo, compounded by ongoing economic challenges, Junub Voluntary Services conducted a Nutrition Awareness and Balanced Diet Budgeting session for mothers on 15th May 2026. Although food is widely available in Cairo, many vulnerable families struggle to maintain healthy diets due to limited incomes, rising living costs, and insufficient knowledge of affordable nutritious food options.
The session aimed to strengthen mothers' understanding of balanced nutrition and equip them with practical budgeting skills to help them make healthy food choices within their financial means. Participants learned about the importance of including carbohydrates, proteins, fruits, vegetables, and other essential nutrients in daily meals while managing limited household resources.
Discussions highlighted how economic hardship often leads families to prioritize cheaper foods that may fill hunger but lack important nutrients, increasing the risk of malnutrition, especially among children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Mothers were encouraged to adopt simple meal-planning techniques and identify affordable, locally available foods that can improve dietary diversity and family health.
The activity provided a platform for participants to share experiences and practical solutions for maintaining nutritious diets despite financial constraints. Through this initiative, Junub Voluntary Services continues to promote healthy eating habits and empower mothers with the knowledge and skills needed to improve the nutritional well-being of their families in challenging economic circumstances.
