Dr. Mohamed Sayaf, Coordinator of the Global South Solidarity School, participated on Thursday, July 2, 2026, in the program “Hawa Masr” broadcast on France 24 in an episode titled “The Economic Losses of Road Accidents,” where he presented a comprehensive vision on the impact of road accidents on the process and the importance of investing in modern infrastructure as one of the most important drivers of economic .
He stated that what has been achieved in the Egyptian state since 2014 under the leadership of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in the transport sector represents an unprecedented achievement in modern Egyptian history, as allocated to developing the transport system reached about 2 trillion EGP. This contributed to the establishment and development of an integrated national network of roads, axes, and bridges according to the latest international standards, which improved the efficiency of the transport network, strengthened connectivity between governorates, and supported comprehensive development plans.
He further emphasized that the national road network is one of the largest national projects implemented by the Egyptian state in recent years, achieving a qualitative leap in transport efficiency through the construction and development of thousands of kilometers of roads, axes, and bridges according to the latest global engineering standards.
He explained that this network has not only improved mobility for citizens and goods, reduced travel time, and lowered fuel consumption, but has also become a key pillar in supporting economic development, increasing the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy, enhancing connectivity between industrial, agricultural, port, and logistics zones, and attracting more domestic and foreign investment. He added that the development of the national road network reflects a strategic vision aimed at building modern infrastructure capable of supporting sustainable development goals and strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional hub for transport, trade, and logistics services.
He explained that the economic losses of road accidents are not limited to vehicle damage or repair costs, but extend to much larger losses including the loss of human capital, increased spending on healthcare, ambulance and insurance services, disruption of supply chains and transport, and reduced productivity.
This makes investment in road safety one of the highest-return investments for the national economy due to its role in reducing losses and improving transport system efficiency.
He noted that the Egyptian experience in developing the road network represents a model that can be applied in Global South countries facing similar challenges, including rapid population growth, increased transport and trade activity, and higher accident rates with their economic and social consequences. He added that investing in modern infrastructure and safe road networks is not only about improving transport, but is a fundamental pillar for sustainable economic development, attracting investment, enhancing competitiveness, and improving the efficiency of regional and international supply chains and trade, thereby supporting Global South economies and achieving sustainable development goals.
He stressed that road development must go hand in hand with the implementation of intelligent transport systems, enhanced traffic monitoring, and the promotion of road safety culture, as the success of the transport system depends on integrating infrastructure with human factors and modern technology to ensure reduced accidents, saved lives, and minimized economic losses.
He concluded by emphasizing that investing in road safety is an investment in people and development, and that the continued development of Egypt’s transport system reflects a strategic vision aimed at building a more efficient economy capable of attracting investment, strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional hub for transport and logistics services, and serving as a key gateway for economic cooperation between Egypt and Global South countries.
