Did you know that some ancient documents and paintings contain hidden messages? Over long periods they may be altered, erased, or simply go unnoticed until researchers and scholars use specialised tools to reveal their secrets.

One famous example of this phenomenon is the Archimedes Palimpsest, which is a medieval manuscript containing copies of works by Greek mathematician Archimedes, who lived in the 3rd century BCE and made ground-breaking contributions to geometry, physics, engineering, and mathematics. Its original text was scraped away so the parchment could be reused, and in the 13th century Archimedes' texts were overwritten with a religious prayer book. For centuries, the hidden writings remained unknown until in the early 20th century when scholars recognised the manuscript's true value, and years later researchers were able to use advanced imaging techniques like multispectral imaging and X-ray fluorescence to recover the erased text without damaging the fragile pages. These restoration methods revealed previously unknown passages, including portions of Archimedes' "The Method" and "Stomachion," providing new insights into mathematical reasoning and the history of science.

The preservation and restoration of old documents play a vital role in preserving works of art and old records, and modern techniques are rapidly improving to reveal more hidden text while minimising harm to the documents.
