Back to Alexandria School,
& MORE

Finally, we arrive at *The School of Alexandria*—a magnificent, renowned masterpiece by the pioneer of Egyptian fine art, Mohamed Naghi. This work completes the series depicting the intellectual and cultural schools spanning the Mediterranean basin, serving as a vibrant historical record of the Egyptian city from an artistic perspective. While Naghi drew inspiration from Raphael’s *The School of Athens*, he imbued the work with his own unique artistic vision of Alexandria’s history, resulting in a painting that is quintessentially Egyptian in spirit and Alexandrian in soul. The composition chronicles the city’s history—from its cosmopolitan inception under Alexander the Great, through the ages, and up to the modern cosmopolitanism of the twentieth century. It brings together selected figures representing the successive eras of this unique Egyptian Mediterranean city—a hub of knowledge, art, and culture.

ROMAN School
& MORE
The Scuola di Roma is the most recent, as its emergence is linked to the twentieth century, and describes several influential movements that used Rome as their primary laboratory—whether in architecture, art, or science.
In architecture: The Scuola di Roma is considered one of the most important movements in the history of urban architecture. It emerged with the founding of the Royal School of Architecture in Rome (1919) and focused on how to modernize a historic city without compromising its character. Led by figures such as Gustavo Giovannoni, the school advocated for "scientific restoration" and the concept of diradamento (urban thinning or mitigation). Rather than resort to widespread demolition, it championed selective interventions that respected the existing urban fabric, blending traditional Mediterranean forms with modern functionality. This Roman ethos heavily influenced monumental projects like the EUR district and the Valle Giulia university campus.
In the visual arts, between 1928 and 1945, an artistic movement known as the Scuola di Via Cavour developed. Originating in the Via Cavour studio of Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphaël, the movement focused on tonal realism and expressionistic color. Their works were often melancholic, depicting a city of shadows, ancient ruins, and intimate domestic scenes. This group is widely credited with preserving artistic freedom in Rome during a period of intense political repression.
In science: The Roman School of Physics (I ragazzi di Via Panisperna) made the city a global center for nuclear research during the 1930s. Led by Enrico Fermi, this group of young scientists worked at the Royal Institute of Physics on Via Panisperna. Their groundbreaking discovery of slow neutron bombardment paved the way for nuclear reactors and the development of atomic energy.
