The Tallinn Song Festival Grounds Arch: In 1960, Estonia unveiled a striking new open-air stage in Tallinn – an immense arched “singing stage” built to host the nation’s beloved Song Festival. This soaring shell structure (locally called the Laulukaar, or “singing arch”) was unlike anyth...

Did you know that Tallinn’s Song Festival Grounds arch – the soaring Laulukaar – has a twin in Vilnius? Built in 1960, this bold concrete-and-steel “singing stage” was designed to carry the voices of 15,000 singers across a sea of listeners. Its curved hyperbolic paraboloid form was so innovative that Soviet architects replicated it almost exactly in Lithuania’s Vingis Park a few years later.

More than architecture, these arches became symbols of unity and resilience. In Tallinn, the stage witnessed history during the Singing Revolution of 1988, when over 100,000 Estonians gathered beneath its shell to sing for freedom. In Vilnius, the nearly identical twin carried the same spirit for Lithuania’s song celebrations. Latvia, meanwhile, chose its own path with the forest-inspired Mežaparks stage in Riga, rebuilt in 2021 as a modern marvel nicknamed the Silver Grove.

Together, these stages embody the Baltic tradition of choral song – where architecture amplifies not just sound, but the identity of entire nations. 🌍💙

🌍✨ Rising above Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius, the Soviet-era TV towers aren’t just feats of engineering — they’re monuments of history. Tallinn and Vilnius stand like uncanny twins, while Riga chose a bold, futuristic path. Together, they tell a story of shared blueprints, divergent visions, and the role these towers played in moments of national awakening.

Would you have guessed that two were designed by the same Georgian architect — but the third became the EU’s tallest tower with a sci-fi twist? 🚀
