European Distance and E-learning Network - EDEN

The smart network for the professional community, and a professional community for smart learning.

With more than 200 institutional members and over 1200 members in the Network of Academics and Professionals (NAP), EDEN assists a wide range of institutions, networks and individuals to become involved in professional information and networking activities. It does so through the organisation of acknowledged European conferences, its publications and information services, and by taking an active role in a wide range of important EU projects. EDEN has also proved successful with thematic activities such as the Open Classroom Working Group (school level distance education), and by contributing to, and promoting, ‘cutting edge’ research in the field. In addition, EDEN has also provided extensive secretarial support to the European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning (EURODL).

Technology creates real value only when we protect our well-being. 💙

EDEN, as a partner in the WINDEE project, participated in the WINDEE Project Partner Meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, on September 29–30, 2026.

The WINDEE project aims to promote digital wellbeing in education and provide learners and educators with the knowledge and tools to create healthier, more focused, and inclusive learning environments.

📌 The goal is a future where digital education empowers learning while supporting psychological, emotional, and physical wellbeing.

During the meeting, project partners discussed the next steps and ways to ensure that WINDEE project results can reach educational institutions and contribute to positive change in education.

The European invites teachers, from primary, secondary and initial VET education to take part in a consultation process on the upcoming European Commission Guidance on assessment of digital skills in primary and secondary education.

🔓 Catch up: The open-source blueprint

Missed our webinar or want to revisit it to understand why going open source is less a technical decision than a democratic one?

Highlights from the session:
- Kerstin Bongard-Blanchy from the Luxembourg Media and Digital Design Centre shared how open source works on a national level. Now, every educator in Luxembourg can use a platform of open-source tools with their school login. Her advice: treat going open source like choosing a life partner. You commit because you're willing to put in the work, not because it's perfect.

- Markus Deimann from ORCA.nrw questioned the webinar's title. He said open source means "better" education only if we tackle the ideological forces against it. He believes education is a practice of democracy, not just tools.

A whiteboard poll on who should own digital tools drew a pragmatic answer from participants: institutions, companies and communities all have a role, depending on capacity.
