JEF Estonia had an incredible opportunity to attend a lecture by Alain Berset, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. Mr. Berset delivered a fascinating talk, reminding us of the challenges Europe is currently facing: war, disinformation, and democratic backsliding. He highlighted the importance of studying international law, especially during times when it is under constant attack, as the situation is indeed challenging. He emphasized that lasting security does not solely depend on defense measures; it begins with institutions that people can trust.
Democracy plays a crucial role in protecting individuals; democratic security encompasses independent courts, transparent elections, and a free media. Europe cannot afford to choose between democracy and security at this critical moment. The security of Europe relies on strong democratic institutions, and we must not choose between defense and democracy; instead, we should defend both simultaneously.
