JEF Estonia had an incredible opportunity to attend a lecture by Alain Berset, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. Mr. Berset delivered a fascinating talk, reminding us of the challenges Europe is currently facing: war, disinformation, and democratic backsliding. He highlighted the importance of studying international law, especially during times when it is under constant attack, as the situation is indeed challenging. He emphasized that lasting security does not solely depend on defense measures; it begins with institutions that people can trust.

Democracy plays a crucial role in protecting individuals; democratic security encompasses independent courts, transparent elections, and a free media. Europe cannot afford to choose between democracy and security at this critical moment. The security of Europe relies on strong democratic institutions, and we must not choose between defense and democracy; instead, we should defend both simultaneously.

Europe Day 🇪🇺 is a day of the continent where democracy was born, where human rights and the principles of the rule of law emerged.

May 9th is a day of our continent, which embodies humanism as a fundamental value, uniting ideals of freedom, equality, and justice. Europe, where every voice matters, and where the rights of each individual are respected and protected. Europe, where solidarity and cooperation form the foundation for overcoming common challenges. Europe, where diverse cultures, languages, and traditions intersect, creating such a unique mosaic.

May this Europe Day inspire us to take new steps towards a shared future, where the values of understanding, respect, and cooperation will guide us forward. Let us strive together to create a more united Europe where everyone can realize their potential, contribute to the common good, and build a world filled with hope and opportunities for all 💫

Let's celebrate this day together! 🇪🇺

A nation facing internal fractures and external threats.
Join us this Wednesday, May 6th, for the third edition of Situation Monitor! We are heading to Karakter Bar to break down the current political situation in the UK.

On the literal eve of the massive "Super Thursday" devolved elections, the UK is also locked in a diplomatic row with Russia over espionage and smear campaigns.

We’ll be discussing what a fragmented UK means for European security and its post-Brexit relationship with the continent.

Expect a quick presentation, a pub quiz to test your knowledge, and an open debate where all viewpoints are welcome.

🗓️ When: Wednesday, 6 May at 19:00
📍 Where: Karakter Bar (Tatari 64/2)
🍻 Bonus: JEF Estonia members get their first drink on us!

Come for the quiz, stay for the geopolitics.

See you there!

Although we often talk about democratic backsliding, the example of Hungary gives hope for a better future for democracy and Europe as a whole. After many years of darkness and authoritarianism, Hungary's experience can inspire other authoritarian countries facing similar challenges. While the damage done by Orbán's regime persists and will not be easily remedied, the entrenched system he created poses significant obstacles in various sectors, including the judiciary, media, and civil service.

In this context, we extend congratulations to Peter Magyar on his notable victory over authoritarianism. May his success serve as a unifying force for the EU, reinforcing our commitment to democratic values. While vigilance and ongoing efforts are necessary to defend against any resurgence of authoritarian practices, this victory signifies the beginning of a hopeful journey toward a more inclusive, united and democratic future

Last Wednesday, JEF Estonia hosted its 2nd instalment of the Situation Monitor! Featured is an outstanding presentation by our International Officer Joosep Laats on Hungary's situation 🇭🇺, the pleasure and honor of hosting a political analyst fresh from conducting a poll on the Hungarian elections ℹ️, and a relaxed evening of drinks and chatting in the cozy backroom Karakter bar 🍻.

Last week, we held an EU seminar at the Europa Experience Center.

Our guest, Dr. Benjamin Heckscher, gave a fascinating lecture about the EU's early history and its roots in "socialist shenanigans."

Then, our board member Maka Etsadashvili, MA, spoke about the imperfections of the EU, exploring how to find beauty in these imperfections by connecting it with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi.

Our international officer Joosep Laats concluded the webinar with a semi-formal workshop, where we tried finding solutions to various possible realities in the future of the EU over the next 20 years.

We sincerely thank everyone who attended the event and eagerly look forward to our upcoming activities and new guests. Stay tuned 🤩

After 16 years of Viktor Orbán's rule, a new challenger is leading the polls. Hungary is heading into its most consequential election in over a decade. What does this mean for the country, the region, and the European Union?

Welcome back to Situation Monitor, the JEF Estonia event series where we break down the geopolitical events shaping our world. Each edition, we gather over drinks to analyze a current topic through a presentation, a pub quiz, and an open discussion.

For our second edition, we are focusing on the historic 2026 Hungarian parliamentary elections, happening just days after our event. We will examine the rise of the Tisza Party, the mechanics of the Hungarian electoral system, and the stakes for Budapest's relationship with Brussels.

The evening:

📊 Presentation outlining the political players and the stakes
🧠 Pub quiz on Hungarian and European politics
🗨️ Guided discussion and casual debate
🍻 Bar setting, come as you are
🎟️ JEF Estonia members get their first drink on us. Not a member yet? Come say hi and we'll tell you more!

📢 We are happy to share that JEF Estonia successfully implemented its project supported through the Next Generation JEF scheme by the Young European Federalists.
Our initiative “Estonian Youth Leading the Way” was selected for funding and received support from JEF Europe to carry out activities aimed at strengthening youth advocacy and foster a deeper understanding of EU values across Estonia, especially in regions and problematic cities, promoting federalistic ideas and encourage expanding JEF in Estonia in different regions and establishing interest groups all around the country.
With this support, we successfully organised workshops and meetings with local youth, bringing together young people interested in Europe and civic participation.

Through this project, we aimed to empower young people, strengthen our local community, and promote active participation in European democratic life.
🇪🇺 This initiative is co-funded by the European Union.
We are grateful to JEF Europe for supporting grassroots initiatives that help bring Europe closer to young citizens.
