We are holding a spring cleanup day in Estonia on May 2nd. Part of the work will take place at the Umbusi Buddhist Centre, but there is also still construction debris, scrap wood, branches, holes, and piles of soil around Khenpo Karma Wangyel’s house – we will try to clean that up as well! Overnight stay is possible! Also a meditation practice next to Umbusi Buddhist Center's Buddha (the distance between Umbusi Buddhist center and Khenpo Karma Wangyel's house is 500 meters). Everybody is welcome! The clean-up day announcement: https://talgud.teemeara.ee/events/umbusi-budismikeskuse-heakorratood

News from the three-year retreat land in Estonia – April 5th
New spring has arrived to the retreat land!

Khenpo Karma Wangyel has been giving instructions (lasting several days, with partial translation from Tibetan to English) for the next part of the retreat. Dorji Wangmo from France has been here hand-crafting the Tormas.

Bob Thurman has often said that Buddhism has not truly arrived in the West when there are no people, even in Buddhist communities, who truly appreciate, respect, and regularly support dedicated practitioners.

We are very happy and grateful for the support we have received from the Sangha before, but right now we need a little more of your help to keep the retreat going.

We are very grateful for any support!

Retreat land in December 2025 - all is still green, and sometimes the day is as dark as evening. But all is peaceful and beautiful. Retreat is going on (probably the best time of the year for retreat). We are grateful to all our supporters! Every once in a while, the retreat people get a shipment of nuts and dried fruit from our friend and supporter, Aivar. Last week, a new delivery arrived. The photo shows some of it. All kinds of support for the retreat people is always welcome! And we warmly thank everybody who has supported us meanwhile (the retreat people and Khenpola's house)! (eesti keel allpool) Under the guidance of Khenpo Karma Wangyel, we performed the meditation practice, "Being Right Here" at the Umbusi Buddhist Centre on Saturday, October 3rd. Khenpo Karma Wangyel outlined some essential key points on how concentration works (it is always good to remind those).

The most important instruction is that when we sit and thoughts arise, concentration means that we do not think those thoughts further (thoughts always arise) – we do not dwell on the past, the future, or even the present moment. By sitting in this manner, the true nature of the mind can gradually begin to manifest. Usually, the mind is so full of thoughts that we cannot look beyond them. Any kind of activity sets the thought-cycles in motion – this is why genuine contact with one's mind can only be achieved through sitting, when the body is also still. Walking in the forest or by the sea, listening to or observing something external, does not help. The essence of concentration practice is to focus on the show of one's own mind.

Khenpo Karma Wangyel summarized the mind training using two concepts:

Dran pa or Mindfulness (keeping in mind the goal): This is the method used to ensure that the mind stays on its original goal (in the Dzogchen sense, the true nature of one's mind). When we notice that the mind is grasping after thoughts, we immediately bring it back to its original place and let the thought be – it will pass anyway. According to the Dzogchen tradition, the task of dran pa is not to forget the recognition that one is in the state of rigpa (complete awareness). Dran pa is likened to the rope we use to keep, for example, a cow restrained.

Shes bzhin or Awareness/Vigilance/Attention: This is the broader concept, a control mechanism that monitors how dran pa (mindfulness) is performing its task. It sees the bigger picture, noticing if the mind does not become too sluggish/sleepy (excessive inward focus) or too agitated/restless (excessive outward focus). The comparison here is with the cowherd who observes the condition of the rope, meaning how well mindfulness is doing its job.

By applying these two concepts, the mind remains continuously in its natural state, once we have initially understood that state.

Such a state has great benefit both in the Buddhist and daily life sense – the mind remains balanced and peaceful, disturbing mental states gradually disappear (for example, depression, one of the main patterns of which is being stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts, begins to dissolve only by not rolling those negative thoughts further). If this practice is accompanied by kindness and the wish to act for the benefit of others, one can achieve the state of complete enlightenment. (The photo is from an earlier teaching in Tallinn.)
Eesti keeles: Khenpo Karma Wangyeli juhendamisel tegime 3. oktoobril Umbusi budismi keskuses keskendumisharjutuse "Lihtsalt siinsamas olemine" (being right here).
Keskendumisharjutuse mõte on omaenda meele etendusele keskendumine.
Khenpo Karma Wangyel võttis meeleharjutuse kokku kahe mõistega:
Dran pa võrdpildiks on nöör, millega me näiteks lehma ohjes hoiame.

We are very happy to announce that khenpo Karma Wangyel arrived today to Estonia and moved to his freshly finished retreat hut/ small house next to the three-year retreat center. He was a little bit surprised that the house was really finished - he had only seen one photo from one month ago (did not look like finished at all) and we also did not tell him this time how the work was progressing:) Thank you for all the donations that we have received, now the road works and rain gutter system are left.. We are tired and happy:)
