Habitat Ilaló

Habitat Ilaló Permacultura familiar y comunitaria Habitat Ilaló is a familiar and community project with 3 sites at different scales growing and developing at the same time.

Habitat Ilaló
Habitat Ilaló is a Multi-scale Permaculture Project placed in the heart of the andean corridor, in a beautiful and magic mountain (Apu) named by the elders “Kilahalo”. We are a young spanish-ecuadorian couple working in social and civil rights (her) and permaculture and sustainable development projects (him). We live and work in the ancestral indigenous and peasant community named “

Comuna Tola Chica”, in the valley of Tumbaco (10 minutes of the village and half and hour of Quito, capital of Ecuador) with a permanent summer-spring climate. We are searching for some help to implement this 3 sites we are working in:
Familar homestead. 2.000 m2 - We are in the final stage of eco-building (stone walls and garden terraces, plasters, biofilter and fishpond). We need some help too in the implementation and maintaing of our food forest and the chicken-compost system. Community Eco-farm. 2 Ha - We are working in the water systems (fish and irrigation ponds, natural pool), kitchen gardens, chicken-geese compost systems, agroforestry systems (andean anual crops, trees, animals) and the incredible building of the “cave” restaurant (inside the mountain). One of the fundamental goals of this project is to learn and revitalize some of this smart, efficient and sustainable ancestral eco-building, farming & cooking techniques. Community Agroforestry Nursery and Agroforestry systems. 105 Ha - If volunteers have interest in this field they can practice and learn with the local experts to manage an agroforestry nursery, to propagate and to care of native and other valuable trees, reforestation and ancestral agriculture techniques…
Community life & wisdom - Of course, volunteers can participate and learn about the wisdom of the elders in all of the community activities and traditional practices. We have regular events like meetings and “mingas” (communal work) and some special events like traditional celebrations (“Inti Raymi and Kolla Raymi”) or workshops in agroforestry, reforestation, water systems design, sustainable land planning and management, etc. Our goals with volunteers are:
The intercultural exchange of knowledge and skills (language, technical, cultural among others)
Spread the word and empower the younger generations in the permaculture principles and the holistic lifestyle
Teach by practice and action-learning in the fields that we have some experience. Articulate the 3 scales we are working in
Help in the implementation of the permaculture and agroforestry systems in the different sites we are participating

We are specially seeking people with some skills and experience in:
Eco-building (plasters, timber frames, biofilters, fishponds, etc.) Kitchen gardens (stonewalls, terraces)
Food forests - edible forest gardens
Apiculture
Chicken - geese compost systems and care
Nursery management & reforestation techniques
If you have no experience or skills in this fields there is NO problem and by the way it can be your opportunity for learning by practice, sharing and participating in the community life: You are ALL WELCOMED! We are waiting for you! Contact Us,
