Ecuadorian Rivers Institute Helping to protect and conserve unique watershed resources in Ecuador

CONSERVATION - The ERI advocates prioritizing recreational river use as criteria in watershed management planning. The emphasis of conservation efforts is to preserve riparian river corridors and recreational flows. EDUCATION - Teaching the importance and benefits of preserving watershed resources is the underlying theme. EVENTS - The ERI organizes special events to raise awareness of watershed is

sues with the local people, and introduce them to paddle sports recreation. PADDLE SPORTS - The ERI introduces Ecuadorians to kayaking and rafting in hopes
that they will become empowered to protect their river resources through direct connections with those resources. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - The ERI tries to educate Ecuadorians to make informed decisions about the management of their watershed resources. The ERI promotes responsible tourism development to provide economic alternatives for the people and help prioritize conservation of the natural resources. Other main areas of interest are encouraging the implementation of municipal sewage treatment and waste management systems, as well as household water treatment solutions.

HUGE SHOUT OUT TO OUR NORTH AMERICAN SPONSORS FOR THE JONDACHI RIVER FESTIVAL!
Your contributions to the event are immeasurable and we can’t thank you enough for your continued support. Thanks to and for the amazing gear donations. They were used at prizes for the Upper Jondachi Race and for the events at Puerto Misahualli which included a beginner kayaker race and a Junior kayaker race (15 years and younger). We are proud that we gave out equal prizes for men’s and women’s races.

Thanks to .kayak for donating a Jackson Clutch that we used as a fundraising incentive to raise money to keep the Jondachi Festival going. The money raised went towards the following:

Watershed forum—community engagement
Intercollegiate Water Quality Monitoring and Conservation of the Amazon
Upper Jondachi Race
Lower Jondachi/Hollin group descent in rafts and kayaks
Rios Vivos exhibition in Puerto Misahualli
Rafting for beginners in Puerto Misahualli
Downriver races in Puerto Misahualli that included these categories:
DUGOUT CANOES
DRAGON BOATS
KAYAKS
KIDS JUNIOR PRO
WOMEN (15+)
MEN (15+)
TANDEM SIT-ON-TOP

The Jondachi Festival with the Jondachi chapter and the Puerto Misahualli chapter have become the most important river event for kayakers, rafters, and non-whitewater people in the region. The idea is to bring people together to celebrate free-flowing rivers, share our cultures, and spread the love and idea of a protected river corridor stretching from the Urqusiqui—Jondachi—Hollin—Misahualii-Napo.

Thank you sponsors, and we look forward to working with you next year!

Santa Clara, March 2025: we gathered for the anniversary of the local organization of Kichwa Indigenous communities (PONAKICSC) and commemorated the International Day of Action for Rivers, by painting a mural to highlight the importance of the Piatúa River to their natural and cultural heritage. In 2019, the development of a poorly-conceived hydro project on the Piatúa River was suspended through widespread community opposition and decisive legal action.
