Muchos nos conocen como "Los Colorados," pero nosotros preferimos nuestro nombre verdadero: Tsa’chilas. Tsa’chila significa 'verdadera gente' y nuestro idioma es el Tsa’fiki, que significa 'verdadero idioma.'
La vestimenta tradicional del hombre es una prenda oh manpe tsanpa de rayas horizontales blancas y azules, sujeto a la cintura con una faja roja o sendon y un naum panu o gran pañuelo en la
espalda generalmente anudado al cuello. La mujer viste con tunam, faldilla multicolor; en tiempos pasados, llevaban el torso desnudo. Completa nuestro vestuario la pintura corporal de tintes naturales. Antiguamente, nos conocían como la provincia de los Yumbos, territorio montañoso de la Cordillera Occidental, en el cual habitábamos Yumbos, Niguas, y Tsa’chilas; el nombre de Santo Domingo se debe a la orden de religiosos Dominicos quienes nos evangelizaron por los años 60. Hace muchos años nuestra gente sufrió una gran enfermedad llamada fiebre amarilla y muchos Tsa’chilas perdieron su vida. Con mucho esfuerzo y con nuestros propios conocimientos superamos muchas enfermedades o males espíritus, para luego convertirnos en algo nuevo y diferente, en algo verdadero. Una cierta noche, algunos shamanes hicieron un ritual y a través de una visión pudieron ver que el uso de la semilla del achiote era la salvación para vencer el mal espíritu que desafiaba nuestra tribu; por eso el hombre Tsa’chila usa esa tinta roja en su cabello. Nuestra etnia tiene 2,500 habitantes aproximadamente y nos encontramos ubicados al sur-oeste de la provincia del Pichincha, zona conocida como montaña baja, caracterizada por suelos fértiles y abundante vegetación. Nuestro clima es subtropical, estamos distribuidos en siete comunidades que se encuentran ubicadas alrededor de la ciudad de Santo Domingo de los Tsa’chilas; aunque cada comuna tiene dialecto diferente, compartimos nuestra gran creencia y práctica del Shamanismo. Los curanderos o 'pone' son conocidos al nivel mundial por sus ancestrales conocimientos sobre plantas medicinales y por sus contactos espirituales. El Shamanismo mantiene viva nuestra cultura, es transmitido por nuestros ancestros y se seguirá transmitiendo a nuestras nuevas generaciones. En la actualidad debido al gran crecimiento que vive en Santo Domingo, hemos ido poco a poco cambiando; sin embargo, luchamos por mantener viva nuestras costumbres que día a día se sienten amenazadas por 'civilización.' Un ejemplo de ello es la celebración en la época de Semana Santa, de Ka’sa-ma Tsa’chila o fiesta de Fin de Año, celebración relacionada con la siembra de la caña, del algodón y del maíz. También en esta época, nuestros padres 'pedían la mano' de los jóvenes en matrimonio. Una gran fuerza es la colaboración de algunos grupos culturales que están motivando y practicando el rescate de nuestras tradiciones indígenas. Estos grupos han encontrado nuevas alternativas de ingreso económico en prácticas agroforestales sustentables, en el turismo, en la venta de artesanías y; al mismo tiempo, a través de estas actividades recuperamos y transmitimos el valor de nuestra cultura. Many know us as “Los Colorados,” due to our custom of painting our bodies and hair with the achiote plant, but we prefer our true name: Tsa’chilas. “Tsa’chila” means “the true people” and our native language, Tsa’fiki, means “the true Word.”
Tsa’chila men paint themselves with the red achiote plant and wear a “Crown” made of cotton on the top of their head. Men wear a distinctive skirt with navy blue and white stripes, and a red sash tied around their waist. Both men and women paint stripes on their bodies using natural black dye ad wear necklaces made of seeds found in the jungle. Women wear a multi-colored skirt; in the past, they would bare their torso. In ancient times, we were known as the province of the Yumbos, mountainous territory of the Cordillera Occidental, which was inhabited by Tumbos, Niguas, and Tsa’chilas. The name of Santo Domingo is due to the order of religious Dominicos who evangelized us back in the 60’s. Many years ago, our people suffered from the dangerous illness of yellow fever, and many Tsa’chilas lost their life. With lots of effort and our own knowledge of nature, we were able to survive many illnesses and bad spirits, transforming ourselves into something new and different, into something true. On one particular night, some of our shaman had a ritual and through a vision were able to see the use of the achiote seed as the salvation to overcome the bad spirits that were attacking our tribe; this being the reason that the Tsa’chila men still use the red tint in their hair today. Our ethnic group has approximately 2,500 people, which are located southwest of the province Pichincha. We are distributed among 7 different villages surrounding the city of Santo Domingo de los Tsa’chilas. Our shamans are known worldwide for their ancestral knowledge over medicinal plants and for their spiritual connections. Shamanism keeps our culture alive and is something that is passed down from generation to generation. In reality, due to the growth of Santo Domingo, we have slowly started to change; however, we fight hard to maintain our customs and traditions, which are threatened daily by ‘civilization.’ Some of our important holidays include “Ka’sa-ma,” which for us is The New Day or New Year’s. We also celebrate the harvest of sugarcane, cotton, and corn. During this time, our parents also “ask for the hand” of the youths to be married. A big strength right now is the collaboration of many cultural groups who are motivating and rescuing our indigenous traditions. These groups have found alternative means of income thru agriculture, reforestation, tourism, selling of handcrafts; meanwhile, through these activities, we are able to transmit our values and culture.
