The spinning top is one of humanity's most universal toys. There are records of clay tops dating back over 4,000 years found along the banks of the Euphrates River. It is even mentioned in classical Roman texts such as The Aeneid:
"As a spinning top
whipped by a coiled lash, flying around in great rings
through an empty courtyard, boys at play intent
on whipping the top along, and driven on by the thong
it sweeps in curving arcs, and the ignorant boys
cluster staring down at it, marveling at the boxwood
brought to life by their blows. With no less speed
Amata drives her course through the midst of cities
and peoples fierce and wild."
