Leatherback sea turtle hatchlings are small, averaging 5.6–6.4 cm (2.2–2.5 inches) in carapace length. They have white stripes along the ridges (keels) of their carapace and white edges on their flippers. Unlike other sea turtles, they lack hard scutes; instead, their shell is soft, leathery, and rubbery, with seven longitudinal ridges running from head to tail.
