Started in 2006 by volunteers from around the world, The Huasquila Reforestation program has focused its attention on deforested areas in the Sumaco Biosphere region of Ecuador, replanting native medicinal plants and trees. The field of ecology, sustainable living and forest conservation, is the primary focus of the program's initiatives, with the goal of creating a protective area for animals tha
t continue to search for new habitats in which to live . Welcoming worldwide participants from all disciplines and backgrounds, we value "green hearts" who share our passion for environmentalism and who wants to help stop the shrinking of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The program's philosophy and attitude is grounded in collaboration, the exchange of knowledge, creativity and the critical thinking of ideas - all which serve as our vehicle to achieving our goals of sustainability. The Huasquila Reforestation Program continues to grow everyday from the support and commitment exhibited by the myriad of volunteers coming together to improve and create these types of environmental projects. Program expansions in the areas of composting, recycling, renewable energy education, and culture preservation are presently underway in our efforts to build and connect to the mission of protecting the Amazon and the locals who reside in it. Projects that are currently operating are:
- Plantain & Balsa monitoring and evaluation
- Planting native fruits
- Recycle bin construction
- Waste management & water treatment
- Community workshops about recycling and climate change
- Alliance and Partner outreach
- Medicinal plant research
- Education empowerment in Cotundo
- Floral art
- and more
