It’s GIVING TUESDAY!!

Fundación Uno a Uno provides quality English classes and homework help to low income students in the town of Cotacachi, Ecuador.

All students need to pass a certain level of English to graduate from high school, yet many teachers have had only minimum training in English instruction. Uno A Uno bridges the gap.

Also, most parents work and cannot provide time for their children’s homework. Some children are raised by grandparents who have only a fifth grade education. Teachers expect perfection in the homework so we provide tutorial assistance in our after school program.

Uno a Uno also provides English instruction to adult learners from many different professions. Specialized taxi, driver instruction, small business shop, owners, and nurses aides can benefit from special curriculum. We have a unique course for women who dropped out of school early and are returning to get their degree. Now they need an higher English level than when they were students.

Please give a donation in any amount to help this program thrive. Thank you.

My name is Ailene and I am a student at Uno a Uno. I am 14 years old and, if it wasn’t for Uno a Uno, I wouldn’t have a safe place to learn.

Both my mother and I are students. At 6:30 every morning, my mom and I take the bus into Atuntaqui where she goes to work as a domestic worker, and I go to my school. We often can eat lunch together because we are close by. After school, I take a 30 minute bus to Cotacachi where I go to Uno a Uno for their afterschool program while my mother goes to night school where she is working to complete her high school education. She is hoping to someday get a degree. I am so proud of her because most girls in Ecuador don’t finish high school. Someday she will be able to get a better job and so will I.

We keep ourselves focused on our future, as every day we walk along a dangerous path.

At the end of classes at Uno a Uno, when it is getting dark, I walk alone to my grandmother’s house to wait for my mother. When she arrives to pick me up, it is after 9pm and we walk the rest of the way home together. But, our walk is a dangerous one; girls and women are not safe alone in this area after dark. There are groups of unemployed men hanging out on the path to my grandmother’s house and on our path home. The danger of assault is always with us. We live with this fear every day.

I was so grateful when Uno a Uno stepped in to help, to make sure I have a safe ride home. Sometimes the staff drive me home or, when they are unable, they find the money to pay for a taxi – something we could never afford on our own.

When you make a gift to Uno a Uno, you change a child’s life, a child like Ailene who wouldn’t find help anywhere else.

At Uno a Uno, we believe in the rights of children, we believe that education is the key to the future, and we believe in helping children and youth lift themselves out of poverty. For just $500, a child can attend an Uno a Uno after-school program for a year, where they can improve their reading, become conversational in English, excel in math, learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and pass standardized tests with distinction.

December 3, 2019 is Giving Tuesday, a global movement for giving and volunteering taking place each year after Black Friday. It’s a time when people get together and rally for their favorite causes. We celebrate Giving Tuesday by kicking off our Christmas 2019 Fundraising Campaign and offering you a special opportunity to support Uno a Uno’s educational programs.

A very generous supporter of Uno a Uno has offered to match donations in December 2019 up to $10,000! That means $10,000 will turn into $20,000 for delivery of our programs in 2020.

Our programs and activities are only possible with the support of donors like you who believe in helping children and youth lift themselves out of poverty.

In Ecuador, only 2 in 5 children finish high school and, without education, the cycle of poverty continues. And that is where we step in – we help lift children out of poverty by giving them a safe place to learn and grow, encouraging them to trust in their own ability to make a better life for themselves.

All donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt.

As a special thank you, anyone who donates over $250 during this Christmas 2019 Fundraising Campaign will receive a special gift: a hand-made, colourful alpaca wool scarf from artisans in the community where we operate. Many students struggle in English and it becomes an impediment for them to pursue higher studies. Our English classes offer a stronger curriculum than what is taught in the Ecuadorian public schools with a focus on each of the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. We use the help of technology to enhance reading with an application called MReader, which allows students to take a quiz on a tablet after each book, and also tracks their progression to keep them motivated. Classroom activities have also been carefully selected to teach life skills, values and themes, such as relationships with others and protection of the environment that have applications well beyond English classes.

The picture is one of our students reading a book in English and getting ready to take the quiz on the tablet.

Everyday, in small group settings, our tutor Consuelo helps many students with their homework, particularly in mathematics which is a very weak subject for many children.

Most of our students would not otherwise get help. Their parents are working long hours to provide for their family and are often also not able to help them since they don't have much schooling themselves.

For those children and their family, Uno a Uno creates hope for the future through its educational programs.

Classes are temporarily cancelled, similarly to public schools, as we anxiously await the results of talks between the government and the indigenous groups, hoping for a resolution to this crisis.

President Lenín Moreno had earlier imposed a curfew to try to end days of violent demonstrations.
