🔹️What’s inside crude oil?

•Crude oil is primarily a complex cocktail of hydrocarbons, consisting of roughly 82 to 87% carbon and 12 to 15% hydrogen by weight. These element’s bond to form three main molecular structures: paraffins (straight chains), naphthenes (saturated ring), and aromatics (unsaturated rings).
While hydrogen and carbon dominate, crude also contains “heteroatoms” like sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen, which form various complex organic compounds that give each batch of oil its unique chemical signature.

•These chemical profiles very significantly depending on the geological source and the specific organic matter that formed the oil millions of years ago. Primarily categorized by API (American Petroleum Institute) gravity and sulfur content, these variations determine the oil’s grade. “Light and sweet” crudes contain small, volatile molecules that flow easily, whereas “heavy and sour” crudes are thick, long chain mixtures with high sulfur levels. Because of these differences, each type of crude requires a tailored refining approach to manage impurities and maximize efficiency.

•The value of these various grades is realized through the products they create, as each molecular fraction serves specific purpose in modern society. The lightest molecules are captured as refinery gases and gasoline to power passenger vehicles and heat homes. Middle range components provide the high energy density required for jet fuel and Diesel, which sustain global transport and logistics. The heaviest portions of the barrel are used for industrial fuel oils in large scale shipping or processed into bitumen to build the world's road infrastructure.
Beyond energy, “the naphtha fraction” is perhaps the most versatile, acting as the primary raw material for the petrochemical industry, it is the source of the polymers and chemicals used to manufacture everything from life-saving medical equipment and clothing to household plastics and agricultural fertilizers.

was a dynamic and inspiring experience that brought together students from different fields, all eager to share their knowledge and explore future opportunities.

The atmosphere was full of energy, curiosity, and interaction, with participants engaging in meaningful discussions and discovering new domains.

As part of this event, we had the opportunity to represent our field, Oil and Gas, and introduce our SPE student chapter. We shared insights about petroleum, its formation, and how it is transformed into products used in everyday life.

Beyond presentations, the event was a space for exchange, learning, and connection. It allowed students to broaden their perspectives, ask questions, and get closer to the professional world.

Overall, Khotwa was not just an event, but an enriching experience that encouraged ambition, collaboration, and growth.

Smarter tools, smarter wells, smarter engineers ; the future of oil & gas is digital 🌟

In today’s rapidly evolving industry, digital skills are more important than ever. To keep up, mastering the right technical tools can truly make a difference; so here is a breif overview of the most used tools in today's industry:

🔹 Python & MATLAB
With these tools, engineers can not only analyze massive datasets but also simulate reservoirs more accurately and efficiently.

🔹 SQL & C++
Similarly, these languages help manage complex databases while allowing you to run high-performance simulations that support critical operations.

🔹 AI & Machine Learning
Moreover, AI technologies enable companies to predict equipment failures, optimize production, and therefore significantly reduce downtime.

•As a result of using these tools together, companies enjoy safer operations, higher efficiency, smarter decision-making, and faster problem-solving.

•By learning these tools, petroleum engineers gain the skills to innovate and actively shape the future of the industry.

So, to make real progress, start small, practice daily, and apply your knowledge to real oil & gas challenges; that’s where true growth happens💫

Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to step into the British School of Algiers classrooms for an Energy4me session, and the energy in the room was absolutely electric! ⚡️

We guided students through the fascinating journey of the Oil & Gas industry, breaking down the complexities of Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream operations. It was amazing to see their curiosity come to life as they asked insightful questions about how petroleum forms, the technology behind this complex industry, and how energy reaches our daily lives.

Seeing the "lightbulb moments" happen, where classroom theory meets real-world industry application, is exactly what fuels us!!

It’s not just about oil and gas; it’s about inspiring future innovators to understand the vital role energy plays in our world💫

🔹️The evolution of drilling technology is not merely a technical improvement; it is a fundamental factor in the development of the petroleum industry💫

In its early stages, drilling was manual, basic, and limited in depth.

•With the introduction of rotary drilling, operations became faster, deeper, and more efficient.

•Later, offshore drilling made it possible to exploit oil and gas resources beneath the seabed.

•Horizontal drilling represented a major strategic advancement, as it increased recovery rates while reducing costs and the number of wells required.

•Today, the industry relies on digital technologies and smart systems to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and minimize environmental impact.

Drilling has evolved from primitive methods to advanced intelligent technologies, becoming a driving force that shapes both the present and the future of the petroleum industry✨
