In June of 2007 a small group of members from Hope Church felt called by God to go on an exploratory trip to the Dominican Republic. Their purpose was to find out if a small New England church could successfully partner with a Dominican church and impact the Kingdom of God in ways that they could not alone. The trip was a success and a partnership has been formed between Hope Church in Sharon, Mas
sachusetts and the Haitian Missionary Baptist Church in San Pedro de Macoris. From the beginning the Haitians have insisted that we focus primarily on providing food for the poorest of the Haitians - those living in the Bateys (small “camps” or villages in the sugar cane plantations where they were brought to work). We were pleased to comply in response to our Lord’s command to remember the poor.
We have worked to provide other kinds of more lasting aid. In the beginning we provided equipment and micro-loans to individuals who seemed able to engage in small businesses, like sewing, carpentry, and buying and selling. Currently there are about five individuals who are working and repaying loans. We are looking for new opportunities for more people.
Since the second year of the ministry, we have worked with the school in San Pedro de Macoris by providing supplies. We are currently exploring ways to assist them in the development and use of more modern teaching techniques.
Starting in 2011 we have been providing home water filters. The filters are made with clay infused with silver, which kills biological contaminants. It is our hope that this will reduce sickness and prevent the spread of diseases like cholera.
One of our team members made extended visits in 2011 and 2012 to deepen relationships and learn more about conditions, problems and opportunities. While we remain committed to providing food and clothing to those who are in need, we are seeking ways to help people find opportunities to better their own situation.
For the first time, in 2012 we were asked to teach a few classes. We have been inspired and learned a great deal from the Haitian Christians we work with. We hope to continue teaching a few classes each year so that they also may learn from us. Over the years we have come to know and love our Haitian partners. We have watched their children grow and have prayed for each other in times of trouble. We communicate with them between trips via Facebook and Skype. Our friendships mean a great deal to us.
