Información general
Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic-Luperon is a branh office of an organization developed to raise awareness for animals in need on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, and for the volunteers who are working to improve the lives of these dogs and cats, and indirectly the lives of the Dominican people. The Need for Community Outreach The streets of Luperon and surrounding towns are populated by animals in varying degrees of neglect, injury, and starvation. Both residents and tourists are exposed to animals that are viewed as diseased, dying or potentially dangerous. Mass poisonings of dogs on the streets and beaches is a common occurrence. Fear of zoonotic diseases, especially rabies and mange, as well as dog bites and cat scratches fuel these attitudes and reactions. Zoonotic diseases are those which can be transmitted from animals to humans. Dedicated individuals will make routine visits to areas of poverty to assist the local people, Dominicans and Haitians, in caring for their pets. This includes providing medication to control a multitude of parasites, rabies vaccinations, education on overall pet care, and even food donations in dire cases. The animal population on the streets, beaches, and at Dominican/Haitian homes will be monitored constantly to ensure that these animals are spayed and neutered to control further overpopulation. Once the Community Outreach program is in full force, the overall health of the animal population will improve by leaps and bounds. Resident expatriates and regular visitors to the area, will soon see the marked improvements in the health of dogs and cats in terms of reduced anemia, weight gain, and fewer skin and parasite issues. The locals will gain a high degree of trust in our volunteers and increased pride in their pets. No longer will female animals be discarded or killed in a desire to prevent future offspring. Dogs and cats will less likely be shunned or chased off due to skin issues. Starving dogs will no longer roam the streets. Luperon and surrounding towns and areas will be safer places for the community animals that socialize in the streets and on the beaches. How You Can Help The ongoing costs of surgical procedures, medication, and food can be daunting. There are still so many areas, even within the towns of Sosúa and Cabarete, that have not been assisted due to lack of physical volunteers, time and funding. Yet, more than a thousand dogs and cats are monitored on a constant basis. Any donation to Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic is used to purchase necessary supplies and pay for much needed surgeries and consultations. As well, new volunteers are always welcomed.
