Our Team

In the summer of 2019, two students from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (an MPH candidate and a medical student) embarked on a public health service trip to the town of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic. Over our 6 and a half weeks, we learned so much about the community, the passion of the local people for mental health resources, and about the beautiful country that we were lucky enough to reside in for a short while. We worked alongside the most dedicated and hardworking community leader either of us have ever met and soon our days were absolutely filled with community events and outreach. The fruits of our labor was information about community knowledge, beliefs, and stigma regarding mental health over the different communities of Jarabacoa.

For the newly opened INTEP clinic, this helped with their outreach efforts to target community outreach and services. But for us as students, we gained so much both personally and professionally. During our time living in the community, we befriended many locals and felt as though we were funny-accented extended family members. Complete strangers would lovingly welcome us into their homes for a cup of coffee and a chat; newly found friends would help us with our Spanish (Jen in particular because her Spanish speaking level was elementary - she would continually whip out her handy dandy pocket sized Spanish/English dictionary); and Abuelitas would teach us traditional arepas and tostones recipes. Sadly, in March of 2020, COVID-19 hit most of the world, and the beautiful community of Jarabacoa was struck with it. Jarabacoa is a beautiful town with incredible mountainous views and the friendliest people you will ever meet, but what Jarabacoa gains in beauty and community, it lacks in resource availability. The two students, Jen and Claire, reached out to the doctor in charge of the INTEP clinic, Xiomara, to ask their colleague and extended family member how the community they love so dearly has been fairing during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Xiomara sadly was unable to give good news. Much like in the United States, Jarabacoa is low on Personal Protective Equipment and many community members are unable to work. Stay at home orders in this community pose issues in regards to food security, income security, access to both emergency and routine medications, and other issues caused by household instability. Xiomara and her team are working tirelessly throughout this pandemic to deliver food, masks, gloves, medication, and other vital materials to families in need. But her team is working on what little funds and personal savings they have. Their money can only go so far.

This is why we are asking you here and now to donate what you can. The American dollar stretches further in Dominican pesos such that every dollar will make a difference in the lives of these communities. Please help these people who were so generous with their time and their love to get through these difficult times. On this page, we will document where every cent is used. We will post updates about what the money has been going to so that you can see exactly how your donations are going to help this community in need. Now is the time that we lend a helping hand to our amigas in need. We thank you for your support. Gracias.
