Newark Community Food System

Newark Community Food System We support the growth of a local food system, amplify community-led initiatives and develop sustainability around urban agriculture and fresh healthy food.

By stringing together a network of Newark-based growers, the Newark Community Food System (NCFS), an innovative collective of local urban agriculture experts, will support the growth of the local food system, amplify community-led initiatives and develop sustainability around urban agriculture and fresh healthy food access. NCFS will engage community leaders and grassroots urban agriculture organi

zations, in leading the effort to cultivate greater impact for Newark’s diverse communities. Our combined efforts will also have a positive impact on Renewable Energy, the Visual Arts (i.e. murals, multimedia, fine art), Ecological Building, and Community Health throughout the Newark region. It is necessary to demonstrate how urban agriculture is essential for community development and health. By connecting these dots, it will not only bring some balance within urban environments, but also strengthen resiliency and create an eco-system where available resources are more accessible for residents. Together NCFS will take actionable steps to empower residents to become actively involved in reshaping their food system, while gaining control of their health and environment.

Thanks to our community partner Melissa Leuthner for her generous support and leadership in facilitating our recent distribution of 244 pounds of wild-caught seafood, allowing me to fully enjoy my birthday weekend celebration. Our goal is to expand the palates and nourish the bodies of families throughout the Greater Newark community.

Through this grant award, we will be able to deepen our collaborative partnership with the Rutgers Institute for Corporate Social Innovation (RICSI) at the Rutgers Business School – Newark, and the City of Newark's Office of Sustainability, Resilience, and Community Transformation. This support allows us to expand our efforts regarding healthy food access and urban agriculture development.

To build an ecosystem of changemakers, we intentionally seek collaborations across all levels, including local organizations, learning institutions, government entities, and corporations. We recognize that ensuring our residents' well-being requires integrating wraparound resources that transcend our core mission.

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that more food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in our everyday trash. To help reduce waste, we are asking guests to bring their own reusable tableware, including utensils, cups, and containers.

**About Food Security in New Jersey**

Food insecurity affects approximately 10.7% of New Jersey's population, with significant disparities based on race and geography, particularly impacting children and communities of color.

* In 2022, over 994,000 individuals in New Jersey experienced food insecurity, an increase from 8.7% in 2018.

* Among children under 18, the food insecurity rate is even higher at 13.2%, affecting over 263,000 children.

* Disparities are evident across racial groups, with 21.0% of Black individuals and 20.0% of Latino individuals facing food insecurity, compared to 6.0% of white individuals.

Let's work collectively to put an end to food insecurity across New Jersey.

We're making great progress with the installation of our hydroponic growing system. This will allow us to produce food year-round.
