CPMR North Sea Commission Interact Programme

🌟 This Friday we scoot off to charming Rennes, the capital city of Brittany known for its iconic medieval half-timbered houses and grand Rennes Cathedral. Also, location of the partner National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment – who is a player in the CLOSECYCLE project.

🚜🏙️Local companies and partners work together in this project to upgrade residual waste streams into valuable, sustainable products for agriculture, urban settings, and beyond.

🌱 They have an impressive 16 showcases on the go and organise regular online POPUP talks - the latest of which dived into the exciting prodcution and use of wood fiber materials as substitutes for peat.

Yesterday, Team had another nice Team Day! We started with a fun team-building exercise. Then the discussions started, and we covered planning for 2025, AI and what we can use it for, event photography, and other relevant matters.

Today, 40 colleagues are gathered in Aalborg for the Monitoring Committee meeting at the impressive Utzon center.
The building was designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon together with his son. Jørn Utzon is also well known as the designer of the Sydney Opera House🙂

🌊 This Friday, we set sail for the stunning Orkney Islands! Known as a haven for wildlife, Orkney welcomes around a million seabirds throughout the year and is home to an impressive 15% of the world’s seal population.

It's also the base of Orkney Islands Council Marine Services, who was a key partner in the Dual Ports project—a forward-thinking project aimed at decarbonizing Regional Entrepreneurial Ports and minimise their environmental footprint 🚢⚡.

Social entrepreneurs are shaping a more inclusive society through innovative business models. And has a role to play in this transformation!

We’re excited to share insights from our dear former colleague, Hans Wevers, who is now a researcher and PhD student at the Open University Netherlands. Hans has co-authored two papers that explore the strong link between Interreg and social entrepreneurship.

Many Interreg North Sea projects are driving inclusiveness and social employment. For example:

🌾 SIRR: Boosting entrepreneurial skills in rural areas.
🚴‍♂️ SMALL: Promoting inclusive shared mobility.
🔦 Inno-Quarter: Helping young entrepreneurs to bring social innovations to market.

A big thanks to Hans for shining a light on this important aspect of Interreg!

This Friday we head to Raversijde, a part of the Flemish city Oostende. Riversijde is home to a pilot in the project Manabas Coast and known for the Atlantik Wall. Oostende is a very old city dating back to the 9th-10th century. It is the largest coastal city in Belgium and goes under the name “City by the Sea”. Placed right at the North Sea is has a big and very beautiful beach.
On the culinary front you can enjoy fresh fish, Belgian beer, and chocolate. A fun fact, you can play city golf several places and discover the city while doing it 😊

🎉 This Friday we travel to Trondheim, Norway! Besides having a reputation for amazing cinnamon buns (kanelsnurrer) and sweet soup (søtsuppe) it also lives up to its reputation as a technology hub. Research institute SINTEF Ocean calls it its home. They are partner in the Anemoi project.

🌊💨 Anemoi explores how offshore wind farms impact the environment by looking at chemicals they release into the sea. Since the busy North Sea is important for the green transition, ANEMOI’s work helps find smart ways to protect marine life while supporting clean energy. 🌿⚡
