A milestone for biosafety in Europe!
On 2 September 2026, Slovakia announced that it will challenge the EU’s new NGT Regulation before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
This is big news—and a moment to celebrate for everyone working to defend the precautionary principle, nature, public health, consumer choice and transparency from seed to plate.
Regulation (EU) 2026/1388 exempts most Category 1 NGT plants from key requirements under existing GMO legislation, including:
🌱 Case-by-case risk assessment
🌱 Traceability
🌱 Food labelling
To be clear: the regulation has not been annulled. But its legality will now be challenged at the highest judicial level in the EU.
The decision follows broad opposition from beekeepers, farmers, researchers, environmental organisations and civil society. It demonstrates that organised resistance matters—and that calls for precaution and transparency are being heard.
The Nordic Seed Alliance welcomes this important milestone. We are building cooperation across the Nordic region so that farmers, seed savers, consumers, researchers and organisations can speak and act together.
Now, we celebrate. Tomorrow, no today….the work continues.
We are not alone—and our Nordic cooperation is growing.
