A High Court legal challenge led by Beyond GM has found that the Government failed to understand the significant consequences – for farmers, businesses, consumers and the organic sector – of removing transparency and labelling for gene-edited crops and foods

A few organic farmers. One ethical consumer. A small advocacy organisation, Beyond GM. That's who just took the British government to the High Court over gene-edited crops — and won.

Yesterday the Court ruled that the government broke the law when it stripped away safeguards on labelling, traceability and transparency, without properly weighing the cost to farmers, seed savers and everyone who wants to know what's in their food. It even recognised, for the first time, that organic farming isn't just a certification scheme but "a distinct and fundamental set of values."

This is worth holding onto: the ruling didn't come from a government or a big institution. It came from a handful of people and one organisation who decided the issue was too important to let pass.

Initiative — individual and organised — is what moved this.

On 17 June, the European Parliament votes on its own gene-editing rules. The same kind of initiative matters now. Write to an MEP in your country, in your own language, before the vote. Ask your network to do the same. Small actions, taken together, are how seed systems stay open.

Make sure our politicians get to know about this before they vote!

We honour Carlo Petrini and the important work he has done for seed soveregnity and movement building. Like the launch of «manifesto on the future of seeds» in 2006 - in deep respect and gratefulnes

Today, in the town of Bra (Italy), Carlo Petrini passed away at the age of 76.

A visionary leader and public intellectual with a profound commitment to the common good, human relationships, and the natural world, Carlo Petrini founded Slow Food, the international Terra Madre gathering, and the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo. Through these initiatives, he brought to life a global movement rooted in the values of good, clean, and fair food for all, connecting communities, farmers, food artisans, cooks, activists, and young people across the world.

“Those who sow utopia reap reality” - a phrase Carlo Petrini loved to say - encapsulates his life. He firmly believed that dreams and visions, when they are just, capable of inspiring collective participation, and pursued with conviction, are not impossible to achieve.

He combined the ability to dream with a deep sense of joy and collective purpose, paving concrete paths toward social change. His work was always rooted in collaboration with others, especially younger generations, and guided by passion, empathy, and fraternity.

His energy, his determination, and his lifelong dedication to others will remain a guiding force for the entire Slow Food movement and for all those who shared his vision.

NSA arbejder for at:

Nordic Seed Alliance Youth is funded — and growing
Great news: Nordic Seed Alliance Youth (NSAY) has secured the funding it needs to take its first steps. For NSA, this is a milestone worth celebrating — seed sovereignty cannot be carried forward without new generations stepping in. NSAY will find its own voice while remaining rooted in the wider alliance. Read more about NSA at www.nordicseedalliance.org

Who are we?

We have started a youth organisation within Nordic Seed Alliance — the Nordic alliance for seed sovereignty, agrobiodiversity, and farmer-led innovation. We call ourselves Nordic Seed Alliance Youth (NSAY), and we need you!
We work to rebuild the connection to a craft and cultural heritage that once played a crucial role in agriculture: seed saving and seed breeding.
Why is seed sovereignty important?
For most of agricultural history, farmers, gardeners, and local communities developed, selected, and passed on seeds adapted to local climates, soils, and food cultures. This practice created an enormous diversity of crops and collective knowledge about cultivation, taste, resilience, and adaptability — knowledge and diversity that many of us are no longer exposed to today.
Large parts of modern food production are now based on a much narrower range of seed varieties, and most seeds are developed within commercial systems that often leave little room for organic transition and locally adapted diversity. At the same time, the EU is introducing two new legislative frameworks that may have major consequences for seed sovereignty and agrobiodiversity: a highly restrictive seed regulation and a deregulation of GMO legislation (also relevant for EEA-countries).
Therefore, NSAY works to strengthen community, knowledge-sharing, and practical skills in seed saving and seed breeding, while also giving young people across the Nordic region a voice in the debate about the future of food and agriculture.
What can you take part in?
A Nordic youth community and network rooted in ecology and seed sovereignty
Workshops, farm visits, talks, and youth gatherings
Learning natural seed saving and seed breeding from some of the most experienced growers in the Nordic region
Political organising and campaigns together with NSA
Participation in NSA's annual seed conference
Collective exchanges across the Nordic countries Curious? Join our first meeting: Wednesday, 27th of may, 16:30-18:00 Meeting link: Topic: Ungestormøde i Nordic Seed Alliance Youth
