Co - creating Biodiversity in Urban Areas

Co - creating Biodiversity in Urban Areas Co-Bio is a project funded by Erasmus+, running from 2023 - 2026. We promote urban biodiversity.

As part of the CoBio project, a local closing event will take place in Skibet, Denmark, highlighting “Vild Start Kasser” – a co-created initiative developed by the local biodiversity group.

The boxes combine knowledge, seeds and simple materials that help citizens create small habitats for biodiversity in their own gardens. The concept demonstrates how local engagement and practical solutions can support biodiversity action at community level.

The event will share experiences from the initiative and inspire participants with practical ideas for strengthening biodiversity close to home.

This activity is part of the final local dissemination events of the CoBio project, showcasing how co-creation can lead to concrete actions for nature.

Most of the activities in our local case studies have now concluded, each demonstrating how co-creation can lead to unique, locally adapted actions that support urban biodiversity. From planting wildflowers and native trees to transforming gardens and schoolyards, the collaborative process sparked many creative solutions—and they might inspire you, too.

You can now explore case descriptions and short videos on the Co-Bio website: https://co-bio.vejle.dk/project-materials-and-results/local-cases-on-co-creation-of-urban-biodiversity/

The Co-Bio project was presented at the “Adaptation? Naturally!” final conference of the UPSURGE project on 6 February in Budapest.

The event offered a rich platform for knowledge sharing and networking among international and EU-funded nature-based solutions projects. GreenFormation shared key experiences from the Hungarian local case study and took part in the parallel workshop on urban biodiversity—offering a space for deeper exchange, reflection, and discussion.

One of the key messages throughout the day was how community involvement has become an essential part of implementing effective and lasting nature-based solutions—perfectly aligning with the Co-Bio project’s mission of co-creating urban biodiversity.

🌍 International Day of the Educating City - November 30th

Today we celebrate the idea that every city has the power to educate, not only through schools, but through its streets, gardens, neighbourhoods and shared spaces.

A city that learns from itself becomes a place of encounter, creativity, and collective growth.

This vision is deeply connected to the Co-Bio project, where communities in different countries have transformed their local environments into living spaces for learning, collaboration, and biodiversity.

Together, we continue to build urban spaces that inspire, connect, and empower. 🌿✨

🌍 Co-Bio: A European Journey for Biodiversity!
Over the past months, six countries have joined forces to make cities greener and communities stronger. From micro forests in Portugal to biodiversity boxes in Denmark, and urban gardens in Palermo, the Co-Bio project has shown how local action can create big change.
In October, all partners met in Budapest for the final international meeting – sharing experiences, visiting the Hungarian case in Wekerletelep, and putting the finishing touches on our joint materials:
✔️ Guide to co-creation for biodiversity
✔️ Method handbook for co-creation processes
✔️ Case videos from all partner countries
These resources will be published in early 2026 – stay tuned!
💡 Why does it matter?
Because small steps, taken together, make a huge difference for nature and for people.

🌱 Co-Bio in Portugal: Growing Together for Biodiversity!

Over the past sunny months, in Portugal, the Co-Bio project took roots in three social housing neighbourhoods in Vila Nova de Gaia, through a series of community-based activities that brought people closer to nature.

Residents took part in:
🌿 Workshops introducing the projects to be developed locally and environmental workshops raising awareness about the role of biodiversity in our daily lives
🌼 Creative and environmental activities with children and young people
🌳 Collective planting sessions that turned shared spaces into greener, more vibrant places

These moments have shown the power of collaboration and community engagement in building urban spaces that celebrate biodiversity. 💚

A special thank you to all participants and to our partner, Gaiurb, for their indispensable collaboration in making this possible!

🌿 Co-Bio Project Partners in Budapest 🇭🇺

Our final in-person meeting took place in beautiful Budapest on 21–22 October 2025, bringing together Co-Bio partners to reflect on our collective journey.
The gathering offered a valuable opportunity to look back on our progress and lessons learned from the six local cases. Discussions on co-creation processes were especially insightful — celebrating both achievements and the challenges we’ve faced across diverse contexts.
Open dialogue on partnership dynamics and future collaboration strengthened trust, clarity, and our shared commitment to community-driven sustainability.
A highlight of the meeting was the site visit to Wekerletelep, where we witnessed how theory meets practice — seeing the real impact of our joint efforts on community engagement and sustainability. 🌱

🌿 The Co-Bio partnership is heading to Budapest! 🇭🇺

Next week marks a special moment for our consortium — the final in-person gathering of the Co-Bio project, hosted by GreenFormation at the vibrant MagNet Community House.

Over two inspiring days, partners from across Europe will come together to exchange insights, celebrate collaboration, and capture the essence of what co-creating for biodiversity truly means. From the six local pilot cases to the co-designed tools and methodologies, we’ll be distilling everything we’ve learned into two key outcomes: the Co-Creation Toolbox and the Co-Creating Urban Biodiversity Guide.

And of course, Budapest will take the spotlight — with a closer look at the Wekerletelep neighbourhood, a living example of how communities can nurture biodiversity at the local scale. 🌸

This final meeting isn’t just an ending — it’s a beginning for new networks, ideas, and nature-positive actions across Europe. 🌍✨
