A very common obstacle for beginner and intermediate level producer is correct loop warping!

Ableton’s engine is usually pretty good at detecting bpm and transients and adjust your sample to the actual track speed, but on longer vocal loops, fx and textures it can struggle doing everything right automatically!

Sometimes the fix is very easy, in most modern packs all the loops are labelled with bpm and key, just change it in the inspector and your sample will fit like a glove.

Download a free bpm counter app on your phone, tap and figure out the correct speed!

Vocals can be extra tricky sometimes:
vocalists don’t always start singing on the first beat, they might start a bit early or a bit later.
If that’s the case, once you’ve figured out the correct bpm, adjust the placement of your sample on the grid by 1/16th and 1/8th increments

Reverb is often used on drums to put them in a space and make them sound more natural.

In electronic music the feel of a natural ambience is not always the goal, when using reverb in modern tech house a small amount goes a long way, you are not looking for a clear reverb sound but more so for the “glue” feeling that a reverb can give to your groove.

Using sends, like Wait For Me does in his latest tutorial on mixing drums with stock ableton fxs, is the best way to apply ambience glue without adding blurriness to your drums 🥁

More often than not if your build and drop are not hitting right, it’s not a matter of adding another random riser to your track.

The sauce is in the automation:
synth parameters, spatial fxs, volume are all fair game and as a producer you should know how to make the most out of them in your build ups and drops.

Automation is what turns a basic beat into a living and breathing pro track!

Struggling to make your double kicks hit right?

Try and have a dedicated track for them! This will allow you to easily address any volume or processing issue you might have in a discrete way instead of looking for each kick in the main track saving you time and effort!

Your master is in the red but your drums still sound quiet? You might want to clip your drums.

Clipping your drums (if done correctly) won’t make them sound any different to your ear, but it will help you not overloading your final limiter when mastering with sudden volume peaks, while allowing you to push your drums a bit louder in the mix!

Programmed patterns can often sound a bit too robotic

Adding the right amount of swing will turn your groove from a boring rhythm to a syncopated masterpiece in no time

Vocal sample sounding pretty rough? Try listening to it in context!

It’s never about the single ingredient, it’s about the whole dish.

If extracting an acapella left you with a very digital sounding, rough and resonant track, try to correct it a bit with your eq to tame the worse sounding parts of it but don’t stop there!

Try building the right environment for it, a “dirty” sample will sound bad alone but it will be probably good in a more crowded context.

Fill up your mix and all of a sudden the vocals imperfections won’t stand out as much.

Mixing like painting is a matter of perspective and composition 🎨
