Q***r Community Club is a group at Roskilde University working to build q***r community on campus, through facilitating social gatherings for connecting students. ABOUT QCC

Q***r Culture Club is an organization at Roskilde University, working to spark q***rness into campus life. We work to facilitate q***r community and culture on campus through entertaining and educational events. The QCC wor

ks from an intersectional framework, to bring both a norm critical and inclusive space into existence at RUC, through collaborative community work, centering the needs of the community. You can join QCC’s facebook group: or follow our page: “Q***r Culture Club at RUC” – to stay up to date on coming events, activities and other q***r fun and games.

INTERSECTIONAL FRAMEWORK

When we work from an intersectional framework, it is an approach we borrow, created and built upon by Black thinkers such as Kimberlé Crenshaw and the Combahee River Collective; Black women who have done the writings, done the studies and built the framework we use to navigate discussions of our identities. The reasoning to work from an intersectional framework, is due to the need to understand that we do not exist within a vacuum. Our different identity intersections are not to be understood individually, but rather in the context of our privileges and marginalization. We are aware that due to those privileges, we are bound to reproduce blind spots. By applying an intersectional framework, we can work to discuss and develop our understandings of marginalization. Johnson: “there can be no pride for some of us, without the liberation of all of us.”

’DO I NEED TO BE LGBT+ TO JOIN?’

No honey - we are for all. You do not need to be a LGBT+ person, to be part of Q***r Culture Club. The definition of ‘Q***r’ which we work with, goes a bit further back in history, to the original usage of the word. Before Q***r was reclaimed by the ‘Gay Liberation Movement’ in the 70’s and 80’s, being Q***r simply meant being an ‘other.’ In other words, not belonging to the majority. It is important to understand, though, that by possessing more privileges, there is a responsibility to navigate the spaces with a humble heart and an open ear. We do not intend to exclude anyone simply for possessing privileges they were born with, but we want people to reflect upon their privileges and positions, and we will gladly take the conversations with you if you are unsure. Within Q***r Culture Club, we do not work with guilt or shame! When we have difficult conversations, it comes from a place of compassion and care, because essentially it boils down to our desire for equality. Empathy is important, and it is through the intersectional work, that we can grow a community of people from different walks of life. Davis has taught us: Capitalism promotes individualism. Working with division and individualism only reproduces the same structures we are trying to challenge. Therefore, it is in our core not to work with shame or guilt. This is a place for growth and development.

BRAVER SPACES

We work with Braver Spaces rather than safe spaces. This is because if you are marginalized on more than one level, no space is truly safe for you. At Q***r Culture Club we strive to create inclusive spaces, where each participant can feel empowered to engage in challenging discussions through the following principles:

Holding ourselves and each other accountable to be humble and openhearted, centering community and care in our interactions. Be aware of one's own privileges and hold yourself accountable. It should be seen as a strength to know when to say sorry, and being willing to learn. Prioritize listening. When we listen, it is not to answer or defend, but to center the voice speaking. Center the voices of people with disabilities, trans, black, brown, indigenous, low-income, non-danish speakers, and non-white, non-western folks. Actively listening is helpful especially if it means we are processing what is being said. Be respectful of other people’s boundaries and privacy. Have fun and take breaks. Allow the space for yourself and those around you, to enter and leave according to their own needs

 What is a community?

A community is a sense of home, where solidarity, common experiences, open and safe communication and respect are key values. The QCC aims to create one big community across Roskilde University where q***rs and allies can meet, build a network, and share their stories and experiences openly. Our primary community activities include community nights, where we both have casual hangouts or participate in pre-planned community events. In addition to this we also create other q***r-culture events, to celebrate and promote our values across the university, such as Drag-nights/bingo, activism, board-game nights and other cozy activities. If you want to be a part of the QCC-community all you have to do is show up with an open mind, heart and ear.
