Spending more is necessary. But it is not enough.

The Ankara Summit Declaration confirms that European Allies and Canada are increasing their contribution to NATO: more investment, more procurement, more industrial capacity. This is welcome. Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security and for the defence of the transatlantic alliance.

But money alone does not create strategic power.

A fragmented Europe, divided into national armies, national industries, national procurement systems and national strategic priorities, will remain structurally weak even if it spends more. Defence is not just a matter of budgets: it is a matter of political authority, common decision-making and democratic legitimacy.

This is why a real European defence requires a federal political union.

Europe needs a European authority for defence, common and centralised procurement, an integrated industrial base, autonomous strategic capabilities and a permanent multinational European force. It needs to reduce duplication and fragmentation, and to build the capacity to act as one strategic actor.

NATO remains essential. But within NATO, Europe must become a genuine pillar: capable of deciding, investing and acting together.

More spending can buy equipment.
Only political union can build power.

European defence will be federal, or it will not truly be European.

🇨🇭🇪🇺 Switzerland has chosen cooperation over isolation.

Today, Swiss voters and a majority of cantons rejected the “No Switzerland of 10 million” initiative. Beyond the slogan, the proposal would have led to the end of free movement and ultimately put the entire framework of Switzerland’s bilateral agreements with the European Union at risk.

We congratulate our friends from the European Movement Switzerland.
Swiss citizens have sent a clear message: they do not want a Swiss Brexit.

Ten years after the UK’s decision to leave the EU, the economic, political and legal consequences of Brexit remain visible. Switzerland has chosen a different path: stability instead of uncertainty, partnership instead of isolation, and close cooperation with its European neighbours instead of retreating behind national borders.

But today’s result is not the end of the story.

For the European Movement Switzerland (UEF Switzeland) the next steps are equally important: rejecting the neutrality initiative this September and securing approval of the new Switzerland–EU agreements, which are essential to strengthen and modernise relations between Switzerland and the European Union in an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.

At a time when nationalist and isolationist forces are gaining ground across Europe, today’s vote demonstrates that citizens understand a simple truth: Europe’s challenges can only be addressed through cooperation.

We also congratulate its Basel section for the historic victory of the “Zämme in Europa” initiative in Basel-Landschaft. Following Basel-Stadt in 2025, voters have now explicitly endorsed strong relations with the European Union in their cantonal constitution.
