Every year, World Refugee Day is an opportunity to honor refugees and stand in solidarity. As of June 2025, 117.3 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced (UNHCR).

The UNHCR’s global message, “Until Everyone Is Safe,” reflects a collective commitment to protection, dignity, and lasting solutions. Often founded by refugees or displaced people, Diaspora organizations hold personal, lived knowledge of the challenges displaced people and refugees continue to face today.

DEMAC is supporting diaspora-led initiatives that strengthen protection and amplify the voices of displaced communities.

Diaspora contributions are a lifeline for millions of households worldwide.

Remittances sent to families in countries of origin help cover vital needs, respond to emergencies, support important life events, and even seed small businesses.

Global remittance flows continue to grow, increasing by 4.6% from USD 865 billion in 2023 to USD 905 billion in 2024 (Migration Data Portal), and were projected to reach USD 690 billion for remittances to low- and middle-income countries in 2025 (World Bank).

At DEMAC, we are proud to support initiatives that promote diaspora financial inclusion, advance innovative finance, and strengthen diaspora as critical drivers of economic recovery.

This World Environment Day 2026, we celebrate the vital role of diaspora communities in responding to climate emergencies, preserving indigenous knowledge, and driving solutions for a climate-resilient future.

The global commemoration of World Environment Day’s host is Azerbaijan, with the global campaign “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” underscoring the need to connect climate action with biodiversity, energy transition, water, agriculture, and broader societal impact.

Diaspora organizations are central to these efforts. From rapid disaster response and recovery to advancing green innovation and knowledge exchange, their contributions are both immediate and transformative.

Why is diaspora storytelling important?

Throughout humanitarian and development dialogues, diaspora voices are often overlooked. The lack of inclusion in formal settings means that the lived experiences of diaspora individuals and communities often go unheard.

This is why storytelling matters. Diaspora storytelling is a powerful tool to put a real face to a real story.

Our 5 focus areas to hone diaspora storytelling:
➡️ Focus on shared aspirations
➡️ Reinforce that there is not one diaspora experience
➡️Have a clear call to action
➡️Carefully consider the channel for storytelling
➡️Combine storytelling with your advocacy focus

Storytelling encapsulates the challenges most diaspora individuals have fought to overcome. This ultimately highlights the hardship faced, the positive impact of community support, and informs co-created solutions.

Sudan is entering its 4th year of conflict.

This humanitarian crisis has resulted in repeated and wide-scale violence, harm, and displacement. Critical services and infrastructure have collapsed; yet international support and aid have failed to address the destruction. As of 2026, there are now 15.3 million forcibly displaced Sudanese people and returnees (UNCHR, 2026).

🌍The Sudanese Diaspora
The Sudanese Diaspora, estimated at 4.5 million globally, has been vital in sharing information on developments in the conflict, mobilizing resources, and coordinating fundraising efforts with local NGOs. In the early stages of the war in 2023, this resulted in support being given to 850,000 Sudanese who were forced to flee to bordering countries.

📢The Future of Diaspora Engagement in Sudan
As Sudan enters its fourth year of conflict, urgent, localized, and sustained action is needed. The diaspora continues to be critical with:

1) Connections with local communities
Continuing to assess the needs and communicate with local communities.

2) Fundraising & direct assistance
Mobilizing financial resources and delivering immediate, life-saving support to communities through trusted networks on the ground.

3) Understanding challenges
Diaspora are vital in addressing challenges in delivering programming or aid inside Sudan.

4) Technical Expertise
Strong professional experience across legal, medical, and political fields.

📢 Highlights of the 2nd AHEAD Learning Series: Moving Beyond Traditional Emergency Response to Anticipatory Action

“If we do not assess thoroughly, we will not get the right solutions.”

The 2nd AHEAD Learning Series in Nairobi, Kenya, focused on shifting mindsets from reactive emergency response to forward-looking anticipatory action in Somalia. 15 participants from Somali Organizations and their partners explored how they can directly apply anticipatory actions in the they work with.

🌍Mapping who does what, where, and for whom
Through interactive mapping exercises, diaspora and local partners identified who is doing what, where, and for whom, building a clearer picture of operational reach, , and opportunities for .
This is essential to understanding how to detect risks earlier by mapping data sources, early warning signals, and information and communication flows, while ensuring these insights are grounded in community perspectives and realities.

💡From whispered discussions to collective action
A key takeaway was the need to translate informal knowledge and community signals into coordinated, anticipatory responses that can prevent or reduce displacement impacts.
The workshop also highlighted the diverse and evolving roles diaspora actors can play in operationalizing anticipatory action.

📢 About AHEAD: Anticipatory Action for Displacement
The Anticipatory Humanitarian Action for Displacement (AHEAD) project, implemented by Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and DEMAC, is advancing conflict-responsive anticipatory action frameworks across seven countries. These frameworks are designed to be inclusive, locally grounded, and shaped by diverse stakeholders.

This International Day of Families, we highlight the vital role of family connections in helping communities stay informed, supported, and safe.

The Mixed Migration Centre found that, among over 99,000 migrants surveyed, 42% relied on friends and family for information on routes and destinations before their journeys (December, 2025). Across all information sources, 34% identified friends and family as the most reliable source of information (December, 2025).

We are proud to work with diaspora communities and to continue strengthening these trusted connections!

🌍 2nd AHEAD Learning Series: Exploring Anticipatory Action in the Somali Context

Following the success of our 1st AHEAD Learning Series, we are pleased that we will host the 2nd AHEAD Learning Series for Somali Diaspora Organizations and their Local Partners in Nairobi, Kenya, from the 10th to the 12th of May.

This workshop will bring together 14 participants from Somali diaspora organizations and their local partners from Somalia and Kenya. The series aims to further strengthen the operational capacity of diaspora organizations and enhance their contributions to anticipatory action.

📢 AHEAD: Anticipatory Action for Displacement
The Anticipatory Humanitarian Action for Displacement (AHEAD) project is advancing conflict-responsive anticipatory action frameworks across seven countries. These frameworks are designed to be inclusive, locally grounded, and shaped by diverse stakeholders.

Meaningful diaspora inclusion is crucial, as diaspora communities bring contextual knowledge, trusted networks, and the ability to mobilize early support across borders. The country selection of Somalia was guided by diaspora engagement capacity in target locations, conflict sensitivity, and key insights from the first workshop.

Workshop highlights will include:

🔹 Overview of the scope and scale of AHEAD Somalia

🔹 Emergency response vs. anticipatory action: reflecting on current practices and identifying opportunities for change

🔹 Modelling session: displacement forecasting and mapping risks and solutions

🔹 Anticipatory action in practice: identifying opportunities for continued capacity support across the broader diaspora community

The workshop will continue to prioritize strengthening diaspora-led anticipatory action. We look forward to welcoming Somali diaspora leaders and their local partners!
