Beyond Carnism

Beyond Carnism We work to expose and transform carnism. Carnism causes extensive suffering.

Beyond Carnism is a US-based, international organization dedicated to exposing and transforming carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals. Animal agriculture is responsible for the unnecessary slaughter of 77 billion land animals worldwide per year, and it is a major contributor to environmental degradation, human disease, and human rights violations. Howev

er, the majority of people who eat animals are unaware that they are contributing to such destruction. At Beyond Carnism, we believe that people need and deserve to know the truth about carnism, so they can make their food choices freely — because without awareness, there is no free choice. Beyond Carnism seeks to empower concerned citizens and vegan advocates through education and activism, to help create a more compassionate and just world for all beings, human and nonhuman alike.

➡️ Have you heard of secondary traumatic stress?

Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but while PTSD affects the direct victims of violence, STS affects witnesses to violence. Many vegans experience STS without ever realizing it, and left unrecognized, it can cause serious problems.

💡 Learn more about STS and how it affects vegan advocates at bit.ly/InfightingSTS.

Most of us were never taught to question what we eat—or why we feel differently about some animals than others. 🐓🐕

That’s not a personal failing. That’s carnism at work.

Carnism is the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals.

Recognizing the system is the first step to moving beyond it. 🕊️

What makes a good person participate in systems that cause harm? 💭

Melanie Joy recently joined Zoe Weil on the Institute for Humane Education’s Solutionary Voices podcast to explore one of the most important questions of our time—and the answer might surprise you.

In this episode, Melanie unpacks carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals. But this conversation goes far beyond food: it’s about how ideology shapes perception, how empathy gets switched off, and how we can challenge harmful systems without shame, hostility, or moral superiority.

If you’ve ever wondered how to challenge beliefs in a way that opens hearts rather than closes them, this episode is for you. 🎧

Sustainable advocacy isn’t just personal—often, it’s a team effort. 🌿

➡️ The fifth and final step to developing a more sustainable approach to vegan advocacy is to help your organization or group build a resilient culture: one that reflects and promotes the principles of sustainable advocacy.

💡 You can start by practicing yourself, encouraging others to do the same, and working to make it an organizational norm.

Sustainability isn’t something you have—it’s something you do. 💚

➡️ The fourth step to developing a more sustainable approach to vegan advocacy is to commit to practicing sustainability.

Attend to your needs every day, to the best of your ability. And don’t go it alone—seek support from family, friends, colleagues, or a therapist.
