Violent Exchange Research Project

Violent Exchange Research Project A platform for scholars and professionals with an interest in the DIGNITY and Aalborg University research project ‘Violent Exchange as Urban Citizenship’

The DIGNITY research program ‘Corruption and Torture: Violent Exchange as Urban Citizenship’ explores the connection between torture and corruption in urban centres in the Global South. The aim of the project is to understand the relation between torture and corruption in order to come up with sustainable and creative recommendations for preventing urban violence, torture and corruption. This stud

y proposes to bring torture, ill-treatment and corruption together under the broader concept of ‘Violent Exchange’. Torture and ill-treatment, on the one side, and corruption, on the other, have been addressed academically and in terms of policy as separate domains of knowledge and practice either as examples of bad governance or gross human rights violation. We address the two concepts and the practices they describe as they unfold in the encounter between police and the policed in urban centres of the global south

The team consisting of six researchers will be doing fieldwork in Nairobi in Kenya, Johannesburg in South Africa, Goma in Congo, Manila in the Philippines, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Monrovia in Liberia. On this page the researchers will share pictures, stories and news from their fieldwork sites. We invite everyone with an interest in development to join the page and take part in the discussion.
