The last episode of the PhDPod season 3 is out! 🎧

In this episode we hear about the evolution of bacterial resistance & the transition from industrial research to a PhD.

When humans develop a new therapy to fight potentially dangerous bacteria, they, in turn, might be able to generate new strategies to counteract our medicines. In this episode of our PhD Pod podcast, Maria explains how the evolution of the bacterial defence mechanisms occurs and how much we should worry about. In the second part of the interview, she describes her transition from a well established laboratory research job in the private sector to a PhD in academia.

🗣️ NEW PODCAST ALERT 🚨
Natural language processing (NLP) & science-based comedy

What are the possible applications of language models (such as the famous chatGPT)? In the new episode of our podcast PhDPod, Antonia talks us through how text documents can be “mined” by machine learning algorithms, the ethical consideration of their use, and how analysing language can reveal medical insights for some brain conditions. Additionally, she tells us her involvement in a collective that communicates science via comedy shows (warning: deadpan jokes included!).

Today Georges, head of UCAPS political, will re-introduce himself. Just like Sune, Georges also already has one year experience as board member of UCAPS and will continue for another year!

“I am a PhD fellow in Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Copenhagen. My project, PFAS and Cardiometabolic Health: Causal Effect and Clinically Relevant Cut-off Levels, focuses on understanding the potential causal effects of PFAS exposure on cardiometabolic health and identifying exposure levels that carry clinical significance. 🧪📊

As Head of the Political Working Group, I coordinate our involvement in political and institutional bodies such as the KU Senate, the PhD Association Network of Denmark, and the 4EU+ Alliance. I ensure that PhD students are represented where decisions are made, that the right people are nominated to key positions, and that they are supported in their work. I also serve as the Vice-President of the Student Committee of the 4EU+ Alliance🌍🤝 My job is to keep an overview of the bigger picture and make sure PhD perspectives remain present and impactful in the conversations shaping academic life.

Outside of research and organizational work, I’m a big foodie and always on the hunt for exciting flavors and experiences. 🍣✨ I also enjoy partying with friends and believe a good night out is just as important as a good day in the office. In my free time, I travel, take photos, and stay active through different sports. 📸✈️🏃‍♂️”

Welcome back Georges! 👋🏼

Today Sune, head of UCAPS outreach, will re-introduce himself. Sune took on the role last year and will continue for another year!

“👋🏼 Hi everyone - I’m Sune, and I’m excited to introduce myself as the Head of Outreach and Board Member of UCAPS.

Professionally, I’m a Postdoc working at the intersection of gut physiology, immunity, and inflammatory diseases. My work focuses on understanding how gut-derived factors and microbes shape immune responses and influence our peripheral organs . I’m especially interested in how microbes can drive metabolic liver disease and studying how bacterial components, adaptive immunity, and intestinotrophic pathways contribute to gut-liver, gut-lung, and gut-brain crosstalk. I’m also deeply committed to scientific communication and building strong bridges between basic science, clinical relevance, and public engagement.

Personally, I’m driven by curiosity, collaboration, and community. I love connecting people, sharing science in ways that resonate beyond academia, and helping young researchers find their voice. Outside of science, you’ll usually find me watching football or enjoying a beer with friends - although these days, most of my time (and energy!) is joyfully devoted to taking care of my newborn.

In my role at UCAPS, I look forward to strengthening networks, expanding visibility, and amplifying the impact of our community. Whether it’s building partnerships, supporting early-career scientists, or showcasing the incredible work happening across our field, I’m excited to help UCAPS grow and thrive.

If you’d like to collaborate, exchange ideas, or just connect, my door is always open 🌟”

Welcome back Sune!

Today Victoria, co-head of UCAPS events, will introduce herself.

“Enrolled at SCIENCE, I started my PhD focusing on leveraging Brain Cell Models for next-generation Parkinson’s therapies 🧠. Why not at SUND, you might ask? I joined a group with a chemistry focus 🧪, working at the forefront of nanoparticle development and I’ll be optimizing these tiny particles to deliver biologics straight to neurons!

I joined UCAPS to find a sense of community as a new PhD student in a new country. Now, as Head of Events, I’m excited to help create spaces where we can connect, unwind, and spark new ideas together!

Originally from the French-speaking part of Switzerland 🫕🇨🇭, I keep getting asked if I miss the mountains but honestly, I’m loving life in Copenhagen! Between biking around the city (🚲 rain or shine), discovering new bakeries, and getting creative at ‘Sip & Clay’ or ‘Strik og Drik’ nights, there’s always something to enjoy outside the lab.”

Welcome to the team Victoria! 👋🏼

Today Jesus, co-head of UCAPS events and treasurer of UCAPS, will introduce himself. “Hey! ...

Today Jesus, co-head of UCAPS events and treasurer of UCAPS, will introduce himself.

“Hey! 🙋🏻 My name is Jesus and I am a PhD student at SUND, working on the preclinical characterization of the immune response triggered by our lead vaccine candidate against Hepatitis C. 🦠

I decided to join UCAPS because I wanted to be part of a community made by and meant for PhDs and postdocs, and I decided to step up as a board member because I wanted to help build up this community from the core.

Originally I come from Spain 🇪🇸, and in my free time I like to hang out with friends and do some sport! 💪🏼”

Welcome to the team Jesus! 👋🏼

The PhD Pod Season 3, episode 6 is now live! 🎧

Cellulose is used everywhere today, from textile to food production, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In this PhD Pod episode, Divya explains how we can make cellulose in a sustainable way from microbes by using ocean water instead of fresh water, the scientific challenges of this production and the socio-economics aspects of her project. We also discuss work-life balance as a PhD student, how to maintain it and what to do if one loses this balance.
