Venerable Bhikshuni Miaodi led those who joined today to write the Heart Sutra transcription, respectfully reciting the Three Jewels Sutra, the Heart Sutra, and dedicating the merits to all sentient beings in the Buddhism realm. The Bhikshuni also shared the story of Master Hsing Yun and his mentor, Venerable Master Zhikai. Once Master Hsing Yun got malaria, while he was a young monk. When he suffered and lay on the bed, his mentor, Master Zhikai, shared his own a half bowel of pickled mustard greens to Master Hsing Yun. Upon that time, it was during the World War II, there was a shortage of supplies. A half bowel of pickled mustard greens was a precious dish for a meal to a monk. When Master Hsing Yun had the meal with this half bowel of pickled mustard greens, he was moved with this caring from his mentor and he made a vow to dedicate his whole life to propagate Buddhism and the Dharma.
Writing the Heart Sutra transcription is a profound practice of the Sutra’s teachings, helping to tame one’s inner greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt, while learning the prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom).
In lunch, everyone enjoyed pickled mustard greens and rice carefully prepared by Mr. Long Ma and the other volunteers. The simple pickled vegetables were transformed into an incredibly delicious dish by the professional chefs, and everyone present deeply appreciated the opportunity to enjoy such a tasty meal. This wonderful occasion also led us to reflect on Master Hsing Yun's mindset in his youth: receiving a half bowl of pickled mustard greens from his mentor in a difficult environment, grateful for the mentor's kindness, and determined to propagate Buddhism and the Dharma. Everyone here also felt the blessings of the Dharma.
