UNLEASH is a global innovation lab that brings together bright minds from all over the world to a new destination every year. The talents find real and disruptive solutions to the Sustainable Development Goal through innovation challenges, inspiration and competition.

Today is International Youth Day, and this year's theme is "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations."

For almost ten years, we've brought young people together from all over the world, representing different cultures, different perspectives, different starting points. And every time, we see the same thing: give them a real problem to work on, and their aspirations turn out to be remarkably similar. They want a say in decisions that shape their future. And they want that future to be equitable and sustainable for everyone, not just for some.

Whilst it is true that the details of the challenge change depending on where you're standing, what doesn't change is what young people are working toward.

We don't think that's a coincidence. When you stop focusing on what separates people and start asking what they're building toward, you find a lot more in common than you'd expect.

So today, we're celebrating not the differences, but what they add up to.

Last Month, UNLEASH Europe brought together young people from across the continent to work on real-world challenges facing the built environment. Over an intense few days, 43 incredible solutions came to life, and 8 teams made it to the Pitching Finals at the Nationalmuseet, each with a solution rooted in a real challenge. Meet the finalists! 🌱

🎣 Kalaaliaraq Atuarfik: a boat-shaped learning space in Tasiilaq, East Greenland, letting young people continue their studies locally while keeping traditional fishing knowledge alive

🎨 Let Them: a democracy tool inviting children aged 6 to 12 to reimagine public spaces through art, because kids' lived experience deserves a place in city planning too

♻️ re:Hub: giving demolition concrete a second life, with material passports ensuring reused elements are safe, stable, and viable for new construction

🧱 Quammagarput: a durable brick made from local clay and quartz sand, giving families in southern Greenland an alternative to imported wood that can't withstand the climate

🚉 A Station on the Line of Transformation: revitalizing an underused transit station in Újpest, Hungary into a lively community and mobility hub

Has it really already been a month?!

A month ago, 200 Talents from all corners of Europe walked through the doors of Copenhagen City Hall for the Opening Ceremony of the UNLEASH Europe Innovation Lab. What followed, was a week of teamwork, site visits, late night discussions, and bold ideas. And so we learnt that the challenges of European cities can become opportunities when youth from all walks of life bring in their expertise and are ready to work together on a shared purpose.

There's a reason Copenhagen was just named the most livable city in the world, for the second year in a row! 🌱

Copenhagen is constantly reimagining itself around the people who live there, and during UNLEASH Europe, Talents got to see it firsthand: a former industrial harbour becoming a sustainable neighbourhood, student housing built from repurposed shipping containers, community spaces designed around sport and city life, and makerspaces giving old building materials new life.

Last week in Copenhagen, 200 Talents from across Europe came together at with a shared goal: rethink the future of the built environment.

They started by asking why, digging into the root causes behind problems that have persisted for years, across four Thematic Tracks: Circular Futures, The Just Green Transition, Rapidly Changing Environments, and Thriving Cities.

From there, ideating solutions turned into a playground for bold, unconventional thinking, as teams pushed past obvious answers to find ideas worth building. Every Talent brought a different background, discipline, and lived experience to the table. And each perspective added a new layer, shaping ideas that were richer than any one person could have designed alone.

By the end of the week, teams presented their solutions with a level of clarity and confidence that only comes from truly understanding the problem you’re trying to solve.

After this intense week, what stays with us isn’t just the ideas. It’s the reminder that this continent is full of sharp, optimistic minds who show up ready to take on complexity with curiosity and empathy.

If this Innovation Lab is any indication, Europe’s future is in good hands.

Last Friday, 8 teams took the stage at the National Museum of Denmark to pitch their solutions for Europe's Built Environment in front of a panel of Judges and a room full of Talents, partners, and guests.

Bringing together such wide perspectives from across Europe in one room resulted in solutions as diverse as the communities they serve: from preserving fishing heritage in Tasiilaq, Greenland, to locally-sourced housing materials in South Greenland, a mobility hub reviving an underused transit station in Újpest, Hungary, a system turning demolition waste into reusable building material in Copenhagen, and a tool giving children across Europe a voice in how their cities are designed. 🌍

And three solutions got special recognition:
🔷 Most Innovative Award went to Envicta, for reimagining how we prove, not just promise, that a building is truly circular.
🔷 Most Impact Potential Award went to Rolling Health, for a model that's simple, low-cost, and ready to change how communities catch health issues before it's too late.
🔷 People's Choice Award went to Rest Bubble, a solution built to help people navigate extreme weather conditions, which couldn't have felt more fitting after the heat we all experienced together in Copenhagen during the early days of the Innovation Lab.

Huge thanks to our Judges, Philip Højberg Unger from Home.Earth, Ditte Lysgaard Vind from Bloxhub, Jakob Strømann-Andersen from Henning Larsen, and Ida Bigum from KAB, for their generous time and for the thoughtful, constructive perspective they brought on how young people play a key role in designing the cities we live in, and in shaping the future we're all building toward.

And to our speakers, Kritika Kharbanda, who showed us how these solutions can scale by sharing real-world examples already in motion, and Pia Lauritzen, PhD, who challenged us to keep experimenting and exploring; to be expeditionists, not experts.

This is what happens when 200 Talents from across Europe come together for a week, driven by a shared purpose to shape a better future for our cities.

How do you turn a week full of ideas into something you can actually put in someone's hands?

By creating a low fidelity prototype of how you imagine your solution coming to life.

After framing their challenges, ideating and sparring with experts earlier in the week, teams spent the day turning concepts into something real that they can test. This is a crucial part of the innovation process, as the feedback they’ll get based on their testing will be key to refine their initial ideas.

Next up? Displaying their hard work at Solutions Festival and pitching in front of Judges.

What does it take to reimagine a city? 🏙️

UNLEASH Europe Talents stepped out of the Innovation Lab and into Nordhavn, Copenhagen's industrial harbour turned urban living lab, where you can find grain silos reborn as apartments, old warehouses reborn as offices, and an old harbor reconverted into a swimming area with a public sauna.

Sometimes the best way to think about the future of cities is to walk through one already being reinvented. Big thanks to Ramboll and Cobe for leading the tours! 🙌

After two days of deep, intense discussions unpacking the challenges facing the European built environment, teams welcomed a lineup of Experts across different fields to help refine their ideas. A pair of fresh eyes was exactly what was needed to pinpoint the gaps in how challenges had been mapped out, and offering the kind of fresh perspective that only comes from stepping outside your own bubble. 🔍✨

And that’s exactly what we did in the afternoon! We traded BLOXHUB for Nordhavn, the largest metropolitan development in northern Europe, to see those challenges up close. Because solutions can't be imagined in a room, teams need to experience the reality on the ground to design something that actually serves the communities they're building for. Big thanks to Ramboll and Cobe for leading the tours! 🙌
