A FEE programme that promotes youth leadership through environmental journalism. YRE develops participants' skills and knowledge.

Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a network of passionate young people educating for sustainable development by producing, engaging, creative, environmental journalism. Coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), YRE is implemented in more than 35 countries worldwide and growing! Participants, aged 11-25, investigate environmental issues and report on them through written, photographic or video journalism, wherever possible proposing solutions. For example, giving them a deeper understanding of sustainable development, enhancing their communication and citizenship skills, individual initiative, team work, critical analysis, social responsibility and leadership abilities.

‘On the Road to COP31: Earth Skills 101 Youth Camp’ was held in September 2026 at Gölbaşı Ata Farm (BAKAP), Türkiye.

The workshop was organised within the framework of the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) programme, in cooperation with the Foundation for Environmental Education in Türkiye (TÜRÇEV) (Çevrenin Genç Sözcüleri), and the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Department of Youth and Sports Services.

Bringing 15 young people from the area together to explore the broader climate agenda through sessions on COP31, youth participation, and environmental decision-making. 🌐

By combining environmental education with journalism and field production, the workshop aimed to strengthen young people’s ability not only to understand environmental and climate issues, but also to investigate, question, and communicate them effectively.

Within the framework of YRE, participants moved from being audiences of environmental information to becoming active producers of environmental stories. 📢🌳

The Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) International Competition 2026- 2027 is now open!

The competition is an international platform for young people aged 11-25 to raise awareness and share solutions to global environmental issues.

This year, the YRE Competition invites young people to stop and look more closely at the small worlds around us.

🌊 🏝️ We are excited to announce the launch of our second RESTORE educational resources: Small Island Developing States, drawing from the RESTORE Big Ocean States Documentary, with a practical example from Mauritius.

Our second RESTORE resource set includes:
🌱 Learning about Ecosystems and Forests - LEAF Lesson Plan and
🎤 Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Action Guide.

These resources explore how coastal ecosystems, people, and the ocean are interconnected, and how ecosystem restoration can support biodiversity, livelihoods, climate resilience, and a sustainable Blue Economy.

The RESTORE educational series is developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in collaboration with UN Environment Programme, supporting the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Created in collaboration with our programme network, these resources inspire educators to bring ecosystem restoration education into their classrooms, sparking curiosity, raising awareness, and deepening learners’ care for nature.

📢 THE YRE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2026-2027 IS NOW OPEN! 🐝 🦇

From bees and bats to butterflies and the many small worlds around you, this year we’re inviting you to look closer. 🔎

Our suggested 2026-2027 theme, “Small Worlds, Big Futures: Reporting from a Pollinator-Powered 2030”, invites you to explore the species, connections, and worlds that can easily go unnoticed but have a huge impact on our future.

But remember: the YRE International Competition is open to ALL environmental topics! Whether you want to investigate pollinators, pollution, climate change, or another environmental issue that matters to you and your community, we want to hear your story.

✨ And there’s something new this year: Open Format! Get creative! Think about your message, audience, and the best way to reach them. It could be through creative media, games, paintings, comics, and more!
You can also participate through 📸 photography, 🎥 video, 🎙️ podcast, 📰 article, or 🫱🏿‍🫲🏻 international collaboration.

Whatever you choose, investigate, explore different perspectives, and solutions, and use your voice to tell a story that matters.

Learners from Loreto College Curepipe, Mauritius, supported by specialists from the Reef Conservation, visited Anse la Raie Public Beach and through Learning about Ecosystems and Forests - LEAF and YRE they explored coastal ecosystems, documented environmental challenges, and raised awareness about ecosystem protection, local wildlife, and ocean health.

🌱 Through sensory exploration, learners observed the plants, animals, water, and soil around them, looking for signs of ecosystem health and degradation.

🪣 They identified plastic waste trapped in mangrove roots, documented on its impact, and took part in a mangrove clean-up.

🐢 Then creating awareness messages encouraging people to protect turtles, nests, beach habitats, and wildlife.

By exploring environmental challenges and highlighting positive solutions, their story can inspire both island and non-island schools to connect ecosystem restoration education to ocean and coastal ecosystem’s health.

Their experience contributed to the upcoming RESTORE: Small Island Developing States educational resources, published by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) within the framework of the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UN Environment Programme).

📚🌊 The resources include a LEAF Lesson Plan and YRE Action Guide, exploring how island states are protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems to support biodiversity, climate resilience, and coastal communities’ livelihoods.

“When you evaluate submissions, what key aspects do you look for, such as creativity, research, or impact?”

Tilen Zidanšek from Slovenia, one of the winners of the 2024–2025 International YRE Competition, asked this question to the International Jury of the 2025–2026 competition.

Sasha Karajovik, member of FEE’s Board of Directors and ECOM, highlighted creativity, authenticity, and solution-oriented thinking, encouraging young reporters to be themselves and bring their own ideas and perspectives to their work.

Salma Kharbouch from Morocco, 1st Place winner in the Article category (15–18) of the 2024–2025 International YRE Competition, asked this question to the International Jury of the 2025–2026 competition.

Nick Nuttall, TV Presenter and Climate Communications Specialist, highlighted the importance of courage, determination and seeking different perspectives.

“How do journalists stay unbiased in today’s polarized media landscape?”

Sofia Duval from Belgium, 1st Place winner in the Long-form Reportage Video category (15-18) of the 2024-2025 International YRE Competition, asked this question to the International Jury of the 2025-2026 competition.

Bernard Combes, Programme Specialist in Education for Sustainable Development at UNESCO highlighted the importance of a multi-perspective approach; recognising biases, showing empathy and verifying facts to ensure responsible and balanced reporting.
