Sexual misconduct at sea is widely recognised as a serious issue, yet it often remains hidden due to stigma, isolation, and a lack of shared data across the maritime industry. These factors make it difficult for seafarers to speak up, leading to significant underreporting.

Unspoken, an initiative launched through the All Aboard Alliance, invites seafarers to anonymously share their experiences of sexual misconduct at sea.

These stories will help build a clearer understanding of the different forms misconduct can take, how incidents are currently addressed, and where prevention measures can be strengthened. The insights will inform the development of the industry’s first global framework to help maritime companies respond more consistently and effectively.

"I am deeply alarmed by the shocking rise in abandoned vessels—more than 300 ships and 3,100 seafarers left stranded in 2024 alone. That’s an 87% increase, leaving crews unpaid, without provisions, and often trapped in poor conditions.

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is doing vital work to help seafarers recover wages, but they can’t solve this crisis alone. We need stronger regulations, better enforcement, and greater accountability from flag states. But just as crucially, the industry must step up.

What can we—as an industry—do to protect seafarers from unscrupulous shipowners who abandon their responsibilities, leaving others to clean up after them?

It’s time for action."

Our director of human sustainability, Susanne Justesen (ph.d), commented on the news of the rise in seafarer abandonment cases reported in Lloyd's List.

The ITF has documented a shocking year for seafarer abandonment, with incidents increasing by 136% in 2024
