Against all odds and despite all challenges the MENA region is committed to mental health

The Integrated Model for Supervision (IMS) project has conducted the first inter-agency Training of Trainers in the MENA region. The training took place between 24 November and 2 December in Amman, Jordan and was hosted by the IFRC Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support soon to become the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub.

The training involved 21 MHPSS professionals from , , , , , , and representing 13 organisations. It was conducted in Arabic and using Arabic versions of both the IMS Handbook and Training Curriculum as well as other IMS resources that has been translated, adapted and tailored to the MENA context and needs.

"The situation in the region is extremely challenging and volatile but amid wars, bombings, mass displacement and chaos, the Middle East and North Africa also represents real dedication, true commitment and unique experience from the humanitarian professionals doing everything in their power to help the people in need. The participants represent first responder organizations highly motivated to implement supportive supervision, to prioritize the well-being of staff and volunteers and enhance the quality of services to the communities they serve – they are a source of hope at a dark hour", said MHPSS Technical advisor, Ahlem Cheffi from the IFRC PS Centre facilitating the training alongside Community Services & Protection Manager Dr. Faiza-Alabdullah from Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC).

A body in movement, a mind in balance

The Sport Coach+ training in Cologne 19 to 21 November brought together a diverse group of coaches and trainers representing different sports, approaches, and experiences. The one thing they all shared was an interest in the overlap between sport and mental health. Natascha Hartl from Kaiserslautern personifies both the mix of experiences and a deep engagement in sport and mental wellbeing.

“I have a thousand ideas and zero fear of trying something new and I think that is reflected in my educational background and professional experience”, says Natascha holding Masters of Arts (MA´s) in health management, corporate management and stress management and with professional experience as a trauma therapist and a rehab trainer in orthopedics as well as neurology.

“Despite being a competitive athlete, my preference as a sports therapist is to talk about movement. It’s important to emphasize that it’s not about efficiency and records it’s about freedom and mental balance,” says Natascha continuing: “I have a holistic approach and for me there is no separating body and mind in therapy. During a run the movement of the body, the feeling of the wind, the smell of the air sets the mind free and releases stress and it is impossible to separate one element from the others – they are all part of the same experience. I think we as trainers, therapists and patients find ourselves through movement”.

24 coaches and trainers participated in Sport Coach+ training in Cologne and each in their own way shaped and defined the outcome. “For me the most important aspect of the training was the exchange of ideas and perspectives across the different experiences of the participants. I learned from them, and I hope I gave them something back in return. Being open to new ideas is the key to growing as a coach, as a therapist and as a person,” says Natascha.

World Children’s Day: Children are our only hope, and we are theirs

20 November, marks 2024 at a time of increasing global challenges and crises.

“From social media bombardment including targeted mis and disinformation to a very real global epidemic and accelerating climate crisis a childhood in the 2020ties comes with fear and anxiety for children. At the same time, too many children’s worst fears have already materialized – they have lost parents, siblings, friends and homes due to war and mass displacement in places like Gaza, Sudan or Ukraine or due to wild-fires, floods or earthquakes in places like Chile, Chad or Nepal,” says Nana Wiedemann, Director of the IFRC Psychosocial Centre, adding: “there is no doubt that such experiences will have considerable and long-term mental effects”.

Across the globe Red Cross Red Crescent staff and volunteers are engaged in ensuring mental health and psychosocial support to children and youth.

“We cannot allow the weight of these challenges to pull us down into despair and apathy. We need to act because children are quite literally our only hope, much like we are theirs. For inspiration we only need to look at our colleagues in Gaza or Ukraine still managing to create spaces or at least moments of relief for children amid carnage, chaos and unfolding tragedy,“ says Nana Wiedemann.

The IFRC Psychosocial Centre has compiled a few key-resources for colleagues working on the mental well-being of children exposed during disasters and emergencies.
