Let's get to know Maria Giovanna Cherchi, one of our prestigious guests at the next event "Sardegna: la storia, la trama."

✨ Concert by Maria Giovanna Cherchi
6:30 PM

Voice and guitar concert by Maria Giovanna Cherchi, one of Sardinia's most authentic and intense voices.

A musical journey that unites tradition and modernity, bringing all the strength and poetry of the island to the stage, accompanied by the captivating guitar.

✨ Maria Giovanna Cherchi made her television debut at the age of 7 with a song in Sardinian. After many years of hard work, in 1995 she entered the "Una città per cantare" competition with the song "Roccas," winning first prize. This marked the beginning of her career as an ethnic singer. She recorded "Roccas," which became a widely listened to single; people began to familiarize themselves with her Sardinian singing style through television and radio. Her artistic life was dedicated to the study and promotion of Sardinian singing in all its forms.
Over the years, she recorded several albums, which garnered considerable acclaim. She duets with local and national artists and appears on important regional and national television programs. She even recorded the theme songs for some of them.
Maria Giovanna's voice is agile, elegant, and confident. Piero Marras, Paolo Pillonca, Gino Marielli, and Gabriele Oggiano have written for her.
In 2007, Maria Giovanna Cherchi was chosen to sing the Ave Maria in Sardinian inside the grotto where the Virgin Mary appeared in Lourdes. No one had ever been granted this privilege before.
She was entrusted with greeting two Popes on pastoral visits to Sardinia: in 2008, she sang the Ave Maria in Sardinian before Pope Benedict XVI, and in 2013, she welcomed Pope Francis with the most beautiful songs from Sardinia's religious tradition.
In 2012, she made her film debut in the film "Su Re" by director Giovanni Columbu, which tells the story of Jesus set in Sardinia.
The singer has performed in several concerts abroad, from Australia to Bulgaria. In 2017, she was awarded the Alziator Prize for music, and in the same year, she was also awarded the "Maria Carta" Prize for best female voice.

✨ Film: S'Ozzastru
Italy, 2023 · 8'29''
Directed by Carolina Melis
Language: Sardinian with subtitles
The film tells the story of Sardinia through the eyes of a thousand-year-old tree, a resilient symbol of nature and a silent guardian of the passage of time, around which—unknowingly—the lives of men and women deeply connected to its presence unfold. It is the story of s'ozzastru and the strong land that has protected it for centuries, an ancient relationship built on wind, roots, and shared memory.

In 2021, a fire devastated 28,000 hectares of land in Sardinia, erasing landscapes, destroying wild olive trees, and killing thousands of animals. A year later, the tree sprouted again: an unexpected and powerful sign, transforming it into an emblem of rebirth, resistance, and hope for an entire community.
