7.6 % of asylum applicants had sexual orientation or gender identity/-expression as asylum motive in Sweden in 2020. The recognition rate did not differ significantly from other asylum grounds. And those, who were part of an LGBTQI+ organitation, more often got a positive decision.

These are some of the results of a new analysis published by Delmi.

Thank you for data indicating what we already know in LGBT Asylum: That LGBTQI+ in relation to asylum and integration is not – and should not be treated as – a marginal issue. And that counselling and support is important.

It would be useful with more data like this also in a Danish context.

The results of the analysis were presented yesterday in Uppsala at the conference: “LGBTQ+ refugees in the welfare state: Research, policy and practitioners in the dialogue.”

Thank you to the organisers and participants for a couple of inspiring conference days with insightful talks and discussions.

We are so happy that Kenneth and Maria from our group got asylum in The Refugee Appeals Board (Flygtningenævnet) this week!

They both have a statement we want to share with you.

Kenneth:
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to LGBT Asylum for the support, care, and sense of belonging you have given me throughout my journey. I have found more than just an organization; I found a community. Through the various friendships and activities, from Pride celebrations to community camps and regular gatherings, you created a space where I felt safe, seen, and heard. In a time of uncertainty, you gave me stability, warmth, and the courage to be myself without fear. Being part of this community allowed me to share my experiences openly, connect with others who understood my journey, and rebuild a sense of hope and purpose. You made my stay in Denmark meaningful during a very challenging period, and for that I will always be grateful. As I begin a new chapter with more security and dignity, I carry with me the strength and support I received from all of you. Your contribution to my life has been profound, lasting and my connection to our community remains important to me.”

Maria:
"When they told me I got positive it was like I was dreaming, and I just started crying tears of joy."

Kenneth and Maria, we are full of joy for your both! Congratulations and thank you for being part of our community! ❤❤❤❤❤

This weekend we have had our LGBT Asylum Family Spring Camp🌿🌸🦀🌊

We’ve had a wonderful weekend with an amazing programme of activities including a group talk, a cyanotyping workshop, and a guided nature trip by the coast where we tried wearing waders, observing various animal and plant species of the coastal area and prepared mussels and local shrimps in the bonfire. We also enjoyed Ghanaian and Colombian dishes prepared by our dedicated chefs and cooking teams 🥰

Thank you all that were part of this weekend and made it possible through their engagement, care, and generosity ❤️

This weekend, we held our general assembly in LGBT Asylum. Everyone in our group – refugees, asylum seekers, and volunteers – can participate and vote. About 70 of us took part.

It was a day with reports from the board and from our secretary general, good discussions, and elections for the board. We wrapped up with a shared dinner and lots of good energy.

Thank you to the Aids-Foundation for letting us use their space. And thanks to everyone who showed up and contributed. We are excited to continue our work together.
