More than 100 metric tonnes of lifesaving supplies have been airlifted to Bunia, DRC, with support from the European Union, to help contain the Ebola outbreak and protect affected communities.

The cargo includes personal protective equipment for frontline health workers, medicines, hygiene materials and medical supplies, expected to support nearly 100,000 people, including children and families facing displacement, conflict and limited access to basic services.

Every year, millions of cartons of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) reach children suffering from severe malnutrition. In 2026, UNICEF is introducing a new packaging requirement that will transform these cartons into toys. Because play is the right of every child.

In close collaboration with The LEGO Foundation, IKEA, Mondi Group, UCL and University of Oxford, we designed RUTF cartons to feature integrated toy designs that can enable play, learning and connection that are essential to the recovery of children suffering from malnutrition.

The power of play helps children regain physical strength, boost cognitive skills and strengthen bonds with their caregivers.
